Benefit Spaghetti And Meatball Dinner For Hoss Jones

There will be a benefit spaghetti and meatball dinner for North Hoosick Firefighter Harold “Hoss” Jones on Saturday, March 1, beginning at 4:30 pm at the North Hoosick fire station on Rt. 22. Hoss is battling cancer and is currently being treated.

Tickets for this benefit cost $10 for adults and $5 for children ten and under. Tickets may be purchased in advanced from several North Hoosick fire fighters, auxiliary members or by contacting Chief Alan Bornt at 378-4538 or Asst. Chief Eric Amidon at 955-8206. Depending upon sales, tickets may be available at the door. Take-outs are also available.

Anyone who would like to make a donation may do so through the North Hoosick Fire Department at the time of the event.

16th Annual SVFD Corned Beef & Cabbage Dinner

The Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department will hold an all you can eat corned beef and cabbage dinner on Saturday, March 8, from 4 to 7 pm in the Stephentown Fire Hall, 35 Grange Hall Road in Stephentown.

Adult, all you can eat dinners cost $12, dinners for children age 6-10 cost $7 and youth ages 5 and under eat free. Take-out dinners will be available for $10 each. Advance tickets are not required.

The Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department wants to announce that they will also be holding an all you can eat Roast Beef Dinner on Saturday, April 26, from 4 to 7 pm.

• Saturday, March 1 – 7  to  8:30 pm – the Almost Spring Concert at the Library.  Shake off your cabin fever and join us for a free concert of Celtic tunes sung in both English and Gaelic, played on Scottish small pipes, guitar, violin and cello.  Musicians are Alannah Fitzgerald on vocals, Ron Bakerian on Scottish small pipes and percussion, Richard Simpson playing guitar and Martha von Schilgen on fiddle and cello.

Beat The Winter Blues Night Of Comedy

The Stephentown Historical Society Presents Chestnuts

“The American Chestnut: Past, Present, Future,” a talk by Kenneth James, chestnut grower will be presented on Monday, March 3, at 7:30 pm at the Stephentown Historical Society’s Heritage Center, Garfield Road (County Route 26) in  Stephentown.  Learn about the pre-blight importance of this forest giant and current efforts to produce disease-resistant trees.  The building is handicapped accessible.  For directions, telephone 518-733-0010.

PVMCC Fund Raising For Youth (Revised)

The Board members of the Petersburgh Veteran’s Memorial Community Center have made it a priority to raise money for the Town of Petersburgh’s Youth Program. Each summer  approximately 28 to 35 children from Petersburgh have had the opportunity to attend either or both components of the Youth Program; three weeks consisting of a recreation camp coordinated with the library’s programs and two weeks consisting of certified swim lessons. Nutritional lunches are also provided for both components.

The writer has revised the following paragraph to correct inadvertent mistakes in the financial figures.

“Sadly, a robust $4,700 was cut from this year’s town budget, leaving only $3,000 to run its five week program ($2,600 if an anticipated $400 reimbursement is not applied for by the program director and granted by the state and county). Last year, the total expenditures for the program were approximately $8,200 and busing for swim lessons alone cost over $1,500 (over half of this year’s budget). At that same busing cost, only $1,100 would be left for this year’s needed supplies, certified swim lessons and the regulated state and county staffing requirements. Volunteer staff do not qualify for reimbursement from the governing municipalities.”

The PVMCC recognizes the program’s immeasurable value to the Petersburgh community. As such, the Board is making plans and arrangements for fundraising opportunities.

The PVMCC will continue to house the Youth Program this summer at no cost.

An account earmarked for the Petersburgh Youth Program is being established to collect donations. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation, it would be eminently utilized by the youth! Any check amount is greatly appreciated and can be written to the PVMCC. Please indicate its intent for the Petersburgh Youth Program. The check may be sent to PVMCC, P.O. Box 516, Petersburgh, NY, 12138.

Jack Barnhill, as indicated during his campaign for the Town Board, has graciously agreed to be the first to donate $1,700 (the approximate amount of his salary) to the Youth Program. Mr. Barnhill stated that his boys attended the program’s swim lessons and he couldn’t think of a better cause to donate the money to.

Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department Texas Hold’em

The Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, February 22, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located at 35 Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5:30 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.

No advance registration is required. A donation of $35 per player will be accepted and give the player 6,000 in chip value. Players can make an additional $10 donation at the door for 2,000 extra in chip value. This tournament will pay one place for every 10 players with a minimum of four places and a maximum of 9 places.

A free buffet will be served at the first break, and refreshments will be available.

King Lear At Hubbard Hall

The Theatre Company at Hubbard Hall (TCHH) will present Shakespeare’s King Lear, widely regarded as the greatest tragic drama ever written, from February 27 to March 23.

Based on the legend of Leir of Britain, the title character descends into madness after dividing his estate between Goneril and Regan, the two daughters who flatter him, while disinheriting Cordelia, the daughter who truly loves him. The role of Lear has been coveted and played by many of the world’s most accomplished actors, and no less an observer than George Bernard Shaw said, “No man will ever write a better tragedy than Lear.”

TCHH Artistic Director John Hadden will perform Lear and co-direct with Ava Roy, who enacts the dual roles of Cordelia and the Fool. Other leading roles will be undertaken by Carmen-Maria Mandley as Goneril, Myka Plunkett as Regan, Gino Costabile as Edmund, Doug Ryan as Gloucester, John Terry as Kent and James Udom as Edgar.

There will be 13 performances of King Lear – February 27 (pay what you will/open rehearsal) at 8 pm, February 28 and March 1, 7, 8, 14, 15, 21 and 22 at 8 pm and March 2, 9, 16 and 23 at 2 pm.
