Kinderhook Lake Chicken Barbecue Fund-Raiser

The Kinderhook Lake Corporation will host a Brook’s Chicken Barbecue on Saturday, August 27, from 4:30 to 7 pm at the Niverville Fire House, 888 County Road 28 (Main St.) in Niverville.  Dinner will be eat-in or take-out.  The cost is $12 for half a chicken, baked potato, coleslaw, roll, chocolate chip cookie and soda.  You may purchase dinners at the door, or reserve dinners or obtain information by calling KLC at 518-784-2050. Proceeds are to benefit our Water Quality Fund and other costs of maintaining the Lake.  Please help us to keep our lake clean and inviting for fun and recreation.

Sandra Owens Earns Degree From The College Of Saint Rose

Sandra Owens, a resident of Berlin, was among 1,749 students who received undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificates of advanced study from The College of Saint Rose in Albany. Owens received a Certificate of Advanced Study as a member of the Class of 2011.

Veronica La Posta Graduates From SUNY Potsdam

The State University of New York at Potsdam recently conferred more than 650 bachelor’s degrees at the College’s annual Commencement ceremony, held on May 22 in a sunny celebration held in the Academic Quad.
The graduates included Veronica La Posta of Petersburgh who earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology. She was also named to the Dean’s List for academic excellence in the Spring 2011 semester.

Snyder Cemetery Restoration Project At Grafton Lakes State Park

On May 21, the Grafton Historical Society gathered several volunteers to preserve and restore Snyder cemetery in Grafton Lakes State Park. Led by Joe Ferrannini of Grave Stone Matters of Hoosick Falls, the group was able to repair and clean several of the markers within the cemetery. The before and after pictures above show the remarkable work the group accomplished in only one day. “We are very thankful to have a partnership with the local community that helps us preserve this special historical site within the park,” said Park Manager Melissa Miller.  “It is remarkable to see what a few volunteers can accomplish in such a short time.”

Run For The Roses Coming Up

Volunteers from the Grafton area are busy planning the 26th Annual Run for the Roses to be held on Sunday, August 14, at Grafton Lakes State Park. The race is a well established and popular annual event.  People from all over the northeast come to participate in the 5k foot race starting at 9 am. Additional events include the 2.5 mile Scenic Nature Walk starting at 8 am and the Kids 1 Mile Fun Run starting at 10 am.  All proceeds for the events will benefit the Grafton Community Library and the Courtney Carelli Foundation for Literacy.

Berlin – Marcia E. Jones, 96, of Dyken Pond Road, Berlin, NY, died on Friday, July 22, 2011, at the home of her son after a short illness. A lifelong resident of Berlin, Marcia was the daughter of the late Milan and Lillian Loker Goodermote and wife of the late Robert E. Jones. Marcia had been a resident of Dyken Pond Road since 1964. She was a homemaker and a member of the Berlin Methodist Church.

Hoosick Falls – Doris M. St. Hilaire, 93, went home to her heavenly Father on Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT. She was the wife of the late William St. Hilaire, who died in 2000; they had been married for sixty years.

John H. Atwater, Jr.

Stephentown – John H. “John Boy” Atwater, Jr., 57, of Pomeroy Avenue, Pittsfield, MA, died on Saturday morning, July 23, 2011, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Pittsfield on February 19, 1954, he was the son of the late John H. and Lois M. Swisher Atwater. He was the loving husband of the former Ellen Hayford, whom he married on July 14, 1990, in the First Baptist Church of Pittsfield.
