Stephentown Motocross In Limbo

The Stephentown Zoning Board, continuing their deliberations on a Motocross track proposed by Howard Commander for a site adjoining New Lebanon off of Webster Hill Road, is not satisfied yet that the application for a zoning variance is complete. A revised plan for the track along with a noise study had been submitted to the Board since last month but not in time for sufficient review by Board members prior to this month’s meeting last Thursday, June 2. Also, a number of questions were raised by the attorney representing neighboring landowners regarding the noise study, the adequacy of the plan and changes made to it.

High Street House Gone!

Quick as a wink this week the house at 38 High Street/Route 22 in Hoosick Falls was demolished and removed. Large trees have also been taken down and run through a chipper. Work is underway to repair the west side of High Street where utility poles have been tilting, sidewalks sinking and the roadway crumbling.

New Lebanon Supervisor Responds To Audit Report

New Lebanon Town Supervisor Margaret Robertson has responded to a State Comptroller’s audit of the Town’s records, stating that “significant inaccuracies” existed in the released report.
As reported in the May 20 Eastwick Press, an audit of New Lebanon was done covering financial activities from the period of January 1, 2008 to July 1, 2009. The Comptroller’s Office was primarily looking to determine if internal controls over wire transfers, purchasing and information technology were appropriately designed to adequately safeguard Town assets.

Then there are those like Claudette Lefebvre – not many of course – who feel the need to perhaps rebuild a farm, open a bed and breakfast, raise chickens, found an animal rescue, start an agricultural cooperative and – in her spare time – bake homemade bread for a country store which she manages as well.

A Little Gladioli History

This year’s planting of gladioli is more than 7,000 bulbs in 15 beds along route 22 in Berlin. The display will be an outstanding explosion of colors in late July/early August.
Now in its fourth year, the Beautification of Berlin Committee has raised funds to recreate in a small, symbolic way the 200 acres of gladioli planted in Berlin in the late 1800s-early 1900s by Arthur Cowee. Berlin and Cowee were renowned throughout the world as the foremost producers of gladioli bulbs and flowers.

To the Editor:
Due to the generosity and kindness of many people, the flower barrels in Berlin are placed and planted. Jim Winn and his crew, having stored the barrels all winter, placed them around town, Mara Murphy and Phil Riccardi donated all the flowers and Pastor Matt and Ellen Olson and many neighbors living near the barrels have volunteered to water and maintain them. Also thanks to Lou Goodermote for getting me some soil to fill the barrel at the post office in Cherry Plain. It takes a community…..
