Stephentown Motocross Application Deemed Incomplete

Continuing their deliberations on a proposal to construct a Motocross sports park at a field off of Webster Hill Road, the Stephentown Zoning Board has determined that Howard Commander’s application for a zoning variance is still not complete. The Board’s engineering consultant, Michael Bianchino of Clough Harbour Associates (CHA) summarized the situation to date at their meeting on Thursday, April 7. Fire On Bovie Hill

The Hoosick Fire Department responded to a call at the Walter Baker farm on Bovie Hill Road on Monday, April 11, at 6:26 pm. “It was an electrical fire in a bedroom,” said Hoosick Fire Chief Bill Rifenburgh. He said a fire extinguisher and water were used to try to put out the fire, but it was too smoky. When the residents’ attempts didn’t work, they closed the bedroom door and waited for the Fire Department to arrive. Two events, kept the fire damage to a minimum, said Rifenburgh. First and importantly they kept the bedroom door closed, containing the fire and second, the Hoosick firefighters were at the fire house for one of their monthly drills, so they were able to respond very quickly.

Village Of Hoosick Falls Board Meeting – No Tax Increase

Mayor Matt Monahan reported that the Village will take $56,000 from the fund balance allowing a zero percent increase in the 2011-2012 budget. He said he recently learned the Village will receive a full $90,000 from the State’s CHIPS fund. He added that retirement funds have increased by $21,000 and he expects insurance premiums to be up 10 percent. He said the sewer and water rates will be the same.
The budget hearing and organizational meeting will be Tuesday, April 19, at 6 pm.

Rensselaer County Legislature – Panther Bowlers Honored

Three bowlers and two coaches of the Hoosick Falls High School Championship Bowling Team appeared in the well of the Rensselaer County Legislature to receive copies of the resolution passed last month honoring the team for its achievements last season. Taconic Valley Historical Society Reminiscences

Join us as we reminisce about the good old days and talk about fun and laughter in the valley at the April 18 meeting of the Taconic Valley Historical Society. Bring your stories and pictures and be prepared to talk about the sports events, parades, celebrations and community fairs that have taken place in the years gone by. Sharon Klein, Berlin Town Historian, has prepared a display of pictures to help jog your memory. Meetings are held at the United Methodist Church, South Main Street, Berlin, on the third Monday of each month at 7:30 pm.  The programs are free and open to the public.

• Teen Poetry Slam – on Friday, April 15, at 6:30 pm. Celebrate National Poetry Month with a coffeehouse SLAM and Open Mic with your friends. Read your poetry or something by your favorite poet. We want to hear your voice on the mic and everyone who reads gets a prize! No reservations needed. You must be 12-18 to participate. Listeners are certainly welcome. Enjoy some coffee and goodies with the words.
• DIY Financial Makeover – on Saturday, April 16, at 11:30 am. You’ve seen the Home Makeovers, Beauty Makeovers; now see a DIY Financial Makeover. Financial Services Professional, Lorri Parisi, will give you some financial tips on how to make your money work harder and go further for you. This program is for people of all ages and income and is free and open to the public. Call the library to reserve a space.
• Youth Book Discussion Group – for students in grades 6 through 9 on Saturday, April 16, at 1 pm. We will discuss The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan.  The first novel of the Heroes of Olympus series, which follows Riordan’s popular Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and includes some of the same characters in minor roles. The book features Jason, Piper, and Leo, teen demigods who are just coming to understand and use their unique abilities as they learn how much depends upon their wits, courage, and fast-developing friendship.  Copies of the book are available now at the library.
• Windowsill Herb Gardening – On Tuesday, April 19, at 12:30 pm. Casey Southard will show you how to get a jump start on herb gardening by beginning on your windowsill.  We’ll use oversized soup mugs as container gardens for a few herb seedlings.  For a taste of things to come, each participant can try their hand at making a specialty herb butter sample. Growing your own produce is the earth friendly way to go! Learn why. You might just develop a taste for it! Space is limited, so reserve your spot now for this fun project.
• Vacation Week Family Movie – On Thursday, April 21, at 1 pm we will show the recently released “Tangled” on our large screen. This fun family film tells the tale of the magically long-haired Rapunzel who has spent her entire life in a tower.  However, now that a runaway thief has stumbled upon her, she is about to discover the world for the first time, and who she really is. The movie is rated PG. Popcorn and drinks will be served.  This event is free and all are welcome!

Lions Penny Hunt Is This Saturday

The Town of Hoosick Lions will be holding their annual Penny Hunt at Wood Memorial Park this Saturday, April 16, at 1 pm.  In case of rain, the event will be held the following Saturday. As always, the Easter Bunny will make an appearance.  The Penny Hunt has been held since 1961 and is now seeing it’s third generation of children.

Harnessing The Barberville Falls

Tom Hohman and Chuck Friday will be guest speakers at the Poestenkill Historical Society’s April 26 program on Harnessing the Barberville Falls. Friday has studied the Barberville Falls and will be presenting a program on the history of the falls. Hohman, who lives on Plank Road, has harnessed the power made from the falls with water turbines and uses the power it generates in both his home and sawmill.
