Petersburgh Budget Stays Under Tax Cap

Petersburgh held a public hearing on its 2015 budget on Monday, October 20. The budget presented will stay under the state imposed tax cap, which this year is about 1.2%. The tax levy will be a little over $9,000 higher than last year.

General Fund appropriations are up by a hefty $34,500 over last year, but that is offset by an increase in General Fund revenues of about $15,000. Highway appropriations are reduced by $21,200 from this year to next.

Flag Burning Ceremony

The Carner, Etman, Smith VFW Post 6340 and Petersburgh Boy Scout Troop 222 are collecting American flags and conducting a flag burning ceremony on Saturday, November 8, at 10:30 am at the Grafton VFW – Fire Hall on South Road (County Route 85) in Grafton. The community is invited to join us to dispose of your worn and old American flags. We will have a box at the VFW – Fire Hall for you to drop off your American flags. You can give your flags to any member of the Post or Boy Scout Troop or call Richard Terpening at 279-3746 to make arrangements to have them picked up.

Saving Simon, The Rescue Donkey

New York Times bestselling author Jon Katz will come to Petersburgh for a reading from his new book Saving Simon: How A Rescue Donkey Taught Me the Meaning of Compassion on Thursday, November 6, at 7 pm at the Petersburgh Town Hall. Hosted by the Petersburgh Public Library, Katz will be accompanied by his border collie/therapy dog Red.

Halloween At The Petersburgh Library

Forget the trick… but come to the Library in costume for a treat on Friday, October 31, between 3:30 and 5:30.

Make A Dream Catcher

Dream catchers are a native American symbol of strength and unity.  As we approach Thanksgiving and its origins everyone is invited to the Library to make a dream catcher on Saturday, November 8, between 10 am and noon.  The craft will be facilitated by Craig Levesque, who has made numerous dream catchers.  One is on display at the Library.  Please sign up at the Library so there will be enough supplies for all who want to participate.

Book Group

The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd is the subject of discussion at the next book group meeting on Wednesday, November 12, at 7 pm.  Anyone who has read the book and would like to join the discussion is welcome to attend even if it’s only this time.  Copies of the book are available at the Library for your reading pleasure.

Story Hour

Pre-school story hour is held Tuesday mornings at 11 am when school is in session.  On November 4 join us for stories about the changing seasons and on November 18 for Thanksgiving stories.  Story hour includes stories, crafts, activities and snacks.  All pre-schoolers and their caregivers are invited to attend.

LEGOS

LEGOS at the Library will be held Wednesday, November 12, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.  The Library received a grant of thousands of LEGOS to make this program possible.  Donations of LEGOS would also be welcomed if your children have outgrown them.

Knitting Group

Knitters, and those wanting to learn to knit, are invited to the Library on Wednesday afternoons at 4 pm.  Bring any projects you are working on and enjoy knitting together.

One Big Beaver

Joshua Kluck of Petersburgh had the opportunity to attend a Youth Trapping Camp at Pack Forest in Warrensburg, NY, recently. The camp ran for three nights and three days on the weekend of October 10 and was overseen by the Sportsman Education Program with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. Petersburgh Town Board Action – Highway Superintendent Ray Harrison Resigns

The Petersburgh Town Board accepted the resignation of Highway Superintendent Ray Harrison at its October 20 meeting. His last day working for the Town will be October 31.

He has taken a job working for the County highway crew, and he will start there at the beginning of November.

Halloween At The Petersburgh Library

On Halloween, Friday, October 31, from 3:30 – 5:30 pm children in costume are invited to stop at the Library to get a free book and some goodies.

Pre-school story hour continues on Tuesdays at 11 am. On Tuesday, October 28 children are invited to come in costume and join the fun with stories, crafts and snacks.

The Library has received thousands of LEGOS as part of a grant. The second Wednesday of the month from 5:30 to 6:30 pm will be LEGO night at the Library. Everyone is invited to come make creations which will be on display at the Library until the following month when they will be dismantled to make new creations. We will begin on Wednesday, November 12. Join us and let your imagination run wild.

Cindy A. Gentner

Petersburgh – Cindy Ann (Crandall) Gentner, 55, died suddenly Friday, October 17, 2014, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT. Born in Cambridge, NY, on October 5, 1959, she was the daughter of the late Joseph B. Crandall and Trevah Yerke Crandall Burdick and the stepdaughter of the late Stanton Burdick. Cindy was raised in Petersburgh, NY, and Grafton, NY. and was a 1977 graduate of Berlin High School. She became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) through the BOCES program at school.

Evergreen Farm Of Petersburgh Named The 2013 Conservation Farm Of The Year

Last month the Rensselaer County Legislature passed a resolution honoring the Evergreen Farm in Petersburgh for being the recipient of the 2013 Conservation Farm of the Year Award presented by the Rensselaer County Soil and Water Conservation District. The resolution says that David and Leslie Green are honored for being true caretakers of their land.
