Malcolm F. Townsend

Petersburgh – Malcolm F. Townsend, 66, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bennington, VT. He had resided on the Petersburgh Junction Road in Petersburgh, NY.

Born on January 16, 1948, in Bennington, Malcolm was the son of the late Floyd Townsend and Florence (Burch) Townsend. Malcolm attended Hoosick Falls Central School and was employed at several area farms. He enjoyed fishing and bike riding.

Survivors include his sisters, Sally Webster and husband Bob, Peggy Morin and husband Tom, all of Hoosick Falls, NY, Judy LaFond of Hoosick Falls, Joyce Ellsworth and husband Bill of Easton, NY, Jeanette Chaffee and husband Norm of Pownal, VT, Nancy Coulter and husband Ed of Pownal and Molly Labonte and husband Don of Petersburgh. Malcolm is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services were at 11 am on Friday, July 11, from the Mahar Funeral Home. Burial followed the service at Hoosick Rural Cemetery, Hoosick, NY. Relatives and friends called at the funeral home on Friday morning. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bennington Health & Rehabilitation Center through the funeral home.

Taconic Expansion

Music Under The Trees With The Hill Hollow Band

The Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center is holding a Music Under the Trees event featuring the Hill Hollow Band on Wednesday, July 9, at 7 pm. One of the emerging bright lights in the Capital Region’s grass roots music scene, The Hill Hollow Band performs with a rambling energy that must be seen to be appreciated. Armed with a multitude of instruments, eclectic arrangements and musical influences that span a century, this band has a well earned reputation as local live performance favorites. Get ready to enjoy richly textured arrangements including accordion, mandolin, fiddle, guitars, pedal steel, bass and full harmony vocals. This free concert will be held outdoors. Bring a lawn chair. Light snacks will be available for purchase.

This event is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Dyken Pond Center and made possible with funding by EP&M, Portable and Custom Exhibits. The rain date is July 10. Come early to explore the Center. Petersburgh Town Board Action – The Art Of Un-Zen

The Petersburgh Town Board meeting this month began with a speech from Tom Berry defending his role as a town gadfly, saying that the Town has saved money on gravel and fuel because of his input and will probably reduce its transfer station costs because he brought the issue up. He said he thinks there is overwhelming support for his ideas from the public. He said people tell him all the time they like what he is doing. He said that he has decided to run for the Town Board next fall.

Petersburgh Library News

The Petersburgh Public Library will begin the summer reading program on Monday, June 30. Everyone is invited to a special family concert, “Reading Rocks,” featuring “Tommy” Gardner of The Uncle Brothers. He presents an upbeat, interactive and parent friendly show, and children of all ages will love it. Gardner began singing and writing children’s music when his own kids were in elementary school. This led to many great song ideas and to the beginning of his classroom workshops for creative song and lyric writing. His song, “Rainbow” (Two Big Kids) won the KidSing 2001 songwriting contest (grand prize) and his other songs (“I Can”, “When We’re Happy We Laugh”) won honorable mention in the 2002 John Lennon Songwriting contest. His solo CD “My Candy Tree” won the 2004 Parents Choice Award. CDs are available at the Library if you would like to preview his music before the program. The program will be held at the Petersburgh Veterans Memorial Community Center.

What’s The Scoop?

On Monday, June 30, at 10:30 am the Scotia-Glenville Children’s Museum will present a program of cool science for curious kids titled “What’s the Scoop?” Learn about ice cream and the cool chemistry of making it. Then top it off by enjoying some!

Rock Creations Art Program

On Tuesday, July 1, through Thursday, July 3, at 10:30 am there will be a special art program led by Sharon Cole, an artist and co-owner of Paulson Wood Products. She was formerly an assistant librarian in Cavendish, VT, where she managed children’s after-school arts programs. Children entering grades 2 – 5 are invited to join her in “Rock Creations.” Here’s your chance to create some extraordinary art from ordinary rocks! Make a great, gray gargoyle face. Learn to ‘paint’ with rocks, sand and glue. Join us and tell us a story in stone. Sign-up is required at the Library since space is limited.

Story Hour 

Every Tuesday from July 1 through August 5 at 11 am there will be pre-school story hour. On July 1 the topic will be “Color Magic,” and on July 8 it will be “Critter Fun.”

Crafts

On Wednesdays between 2 and 4 pm from July 2 – August 6 there will be drop in crafts for children of all ages to make something to take home. On July 2 – “Pop out an eyeball” – make an eyeball out of a donut hole, and on July 9 – “Slime Attack” – make some slime to take home.

Puppet People

On Monday, July 7, at 10:30 am everyone is invited to join The Puppet People as they present “Jack and the Bean Stalk.” Explore this classic and the science behind it! Find out what you get when you mix one cow, three magic beans and one giant bean stalk. Help the hero save the day.

Digital Photography Workshop

Youth ages 10-16 are invited to sign up for a special digital photography workshop. There is room for 8 participants in this workshop which will be held from 1 to 3 pm, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, July 7, 9 and 11. Sign-up is required since space is limited. Everyone will learn how to take the best pictures, edit them and prepare them for printing.

Petersburgh Summer Youth Recreation Enrollment Forms Due

The Petersburgh Summer Youth Recreation Program will be a four week program starting on Monday, June 30, and running through Friday, July 25. There will be no program on Friday, July 4. The last week of recreation will consist of fun and educational field trips. More information will be forthcoming.

Swimming lessons will not be available this year due to the Hoosick Pool closing for maintenance. It is anticipated that the swimming lessons will resume next year.

Petersburgh Youth Recreation Program enrollment forms are due by Friday, June 27, and are now available at the Petersburgh Library and on the Petersburgh Post Office’s bulletin board.

Memorial Service – Rose Hewitt
