Saunters In The Shire

June 28, 2013 By eastwickpress

The Petersburgh Public Library is sponsoring a series of visits to “Peter’s People.” In 2012 the Library received a grant to sponsor Barton and Priscilla McLean in the making of “Peter’s People…Creating the Dream.” This DVD is available to be checked out of the Library and features a number of local artists and their dreams in relation to Petersburgh. This generated interest by the public in seeing first hand some of the locations in the film. The Library will be sponsoring a few field trips this summer to share the beauty that was shown in the film. Everyone is invited to meet at the Library on Wednesday, July 10, at 5 pm for the first excursion to the gardens of the McLeans. More dates will be announced in the near future.

Letter To The Editor – Left Out

June 21, 2013 By eastwickpress

To the Editor:
On Monday, June 10, my family and I attended our daughters eighth grade moving up ceremony at Berlin Middle School. Although it was a wonderful event and many students were recognized for their efforts, it was a shame that the students who excelled in the advanced classes of algebra and science, taking ninth grade classes, were not mentioned. This was a time of recognition, and they were left out. Below is a list of those students who deserve to be congratulated for their efforts and outstanding work throughout the school year.
Those students are:
Alyssa Bierwirth
Emma Bowen
Alexander Flowers
Sarah Jean French
Samantha Hebert
Elysia Mars
Taylor Meyer
Ioann Popov
Christina Shupe
Congratulations to all of you with this outstanding achievement!
Sincerely
Stoney Bierwirth

Petersburgh Resident Helps Protect Against Invasive Species

June 14, 2013 By eastwickpress

Paul Garrison of Petersburgh is helping guard the Adirondack Park against the spread of invasive species this summer. Garrison, a student at Paul Smith’s College, is a steward for the Watershed Stewardship Program. This college led initiative protects rivers, lakes and other waterways against invasives and teaches boaters how to keep an eye out for problems on their own.
Invasive plants and animals such as Eurasian watermilfoil, zebra mussels and spiny waterflea pose a growing threat not just to area waterways but also to the economies of Adirondack communities. When invasives take hold in a body of water, they can displace native species and rapidly multiply, making waterways impassible to motorboats and hurting tourism and other industries.
Garrison and the other watershed stewards attended a training session at Paul Smith’s College in May before starting their duties on Memorial Day. While stationed at boat launches across the Adirondacks, the stewards will conduct voluntary inspections of boats entering and leaving the water for invasives. They’ll remove any that they find and convey the importance of clean boats, clean gear and clean waters to boaters. The program runs through Labor Day.
The Watershed Stewardship Program is part of the Adirondack Watershed Institute at Paul Smith’s College, which is dedicated to protecting waterways and ecosystems across the six-million-acre Adirondack Park.
