Petersburgh Rod & Gun Club will be sponsoring an ice fishing derby on Dyken Pond on February 2 from 6 am to 3 pm. There will be prizes for perch/walleye and pickerel. The entry fee is $10 for adults, $5 for ages 12 and under. SUNY Potsdam President Dr. John F. Schwaller honored a total of 884 students for earning the highest marks in Fall 2012.

Petersburgh Organizational Meeting

The Town of Petersburgh held its organizational meeting for 2013 on January 7. Most of the appointments are routine, but there were two jobs that had competing applicants. Charlie Kovage applied to be Building Inspector, as did the incumbent, Doug Hull. The Board felt that Hull is doing a good job and decided to stick with him. Campground Owners of New York (CONY) recently announced that Broken Wheel Campground in Petersburgh raised $500 in donations for Camp Good Days and Special Times, as part of CONY’s first ever statewide fundraising event for charity held this past summer.

Petersburgh Community Rallies For Votra Family

Boy Scout Troop 222 provided several scouts and leaders to help with a spaghetti dinner held at the Petersburgh Veterans Memorial Community Center for the Votra family on December 14. Many Community members came together to assist with the fundraiser that Friday night. Since the Votra family lost their house to a fire on November 26 the community has risen to the challenge. Over 200 meals were served and all the funds raised go directly to the family.

Former Petersburgh Resident Publishes Third Book
William C. Webster, who grew up on the family farm on Armsby Road in Petersburgh, has published his third book, a work of fiction entitled Wentworth Rock. A sequel to his first two books, the story is centered in rural areas of Vermont and New Hampshire and holds fast to the Jeffersonian ideals that characterized his previous works.
Webster attended the tiny, one room Petersburgh School District Number Three for his elementary years. After graduating from Hoosick Falls Central School in 1962, he attended Susquehanna University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in history and government. He earned a Master of Arts Degree in history from East Stroudsburg University and taught history, government and economics in the Delaware Valley School District for thirty years.

Maccabee Haas Graduates From Basic Training
Army National Guard Pvt. Maccabee E. Haas has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, the military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.
Hass is the son of Joseph and Janet Haas of Dill Brook Road, Petersburgh.
He is a 2011 graduate of the High School of American Studies at Lehman College, Bronx.
