Twenty Years And Still Kicking

January 6, 2012 By eastwickpress

by Bea Peterson
The Eastwick Press begins its 20th year of publication with this first issue of 2012. Over that time it has grown from an 8½ by 11 inch monthly news sheet to the 16 page weekly tabloid size newspaper it is today. Circulation has grown from less than 100 to near 2,000. Begun 20 years ago as the Petersburgh Poop (a military term meaning inside information) the name was soon changed to The Petersburgh Press. When the coverage area expanded to Grafton it became The Press and remained that as the coverage area grew. Ten years ago the name was changed again as The Press didn’t really describe who we were. So, using the old Dutch suffix, “wick” meaning area, the paper became The Eastwick Press. The name was chosen because we cover the eastern portion of Rensselaer County, once known as Rensselaerswyck, and it appears to have caught on – we get few references to the witches.

by Alex Brooks

He suggests that each committee have two citizens and one Town Board member on it. He would like to appoint a committee to look into economic development and attracting business into town,  one to go over Town Laws, to revise and reconcile them to create a unified set of Town laws, one to look into the feasibility of using alternative energy to light and power the Town Buildings and an ethics committee to revise and update the Town’s ethics policy.

On Sunday September 4, 17 year old Nathan Therien was driving through Petersburgh when he suddenly and very unexpectedly went into cardiac arrest. This was on Route 22 near the intersection with Prosser Hollow Road. Nathan’s 20 year old sister, Paige, was in the passenger seat and managed to bring the car to a stop by the side of the road. Their parents were in another car ahead of them, and when they realized their children’s car was not behind them they returned to where Nathan and Paige’s car had stopped. Petersburgh Town Board Action – Duane Goodermote Jr. Appointed to Town Board

December 22, 2011 By eastwickpress

by Alex Brooks
The Petersburgh Town Board accepted with regret the resignation of Amy Manchester. She is giving up her position on the Town Council to take up her duties as the new Town Justice. Amy recently attended a training course for new Town Justices at SUNY. She said it was hard, but she got a 98 on the concluding test and is ready to take up her duties. Amy passed around her father’s certificate of completion from the same course, which he completed just about 50 years ago, in February of 1962, when he started his service as Town Justice in Petersburgh. Amy’s father, Neil Manchester, passed away the afternoon after she got back from her Justice training course.

Letter To The Editor – Focus On Christ During The Holiday Season

December 22, 2011 By eastwickpress

To the Editor:
Two things drive me crazy during this season: the focus on the secular and (ashamedly) the never ending requests for donations. The latter changed Saturday when I visited my sister. She is schizophrenic and in a nursing home. She has been crazy for 51 of her 69 years, yet she is a better Christian than I could ever be. She had one of those little plastic wrapped Kleenex packages. This was a gift from the Salvation Army. She was so excited that they came to visit her and gave her a gift. Then she gave it to me and asked me to wrap to give to our mother, saying, “It is not much but it is all I have to give her.”
