Arrest Made in Bates Murder

The Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office on Friday evening, March 4, announced the arrest of 22-year-old Ian J. Hasselwander of Petersburgh for the disappearance and death of 20- year-old Morgan Bates of Eagle Bridge. Bates was reported missing on Tuesday, February 22, with sightings reported early that morning in both Eagle Bridge and Petersburgh. Her body was subsequently located on Sunday, February 27 in a remote area of the Cherry Plain State Park near Black River Road.

Hasselwander now faces four felony counts, including Murder in the Second Degree, Assault in the First Degree, Strangulation in the First Degree and Concealment of a Human Corpse. Woman’s Body Found in Cherry Plain State Park

Here is the statement on the discovery from the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office: “The Office confirms the body of an unidentified female has been located in the area of Cherry Plain State Park, under suspicious circumstances, on Sunday, February 27. 

The victim’s identity will be released following an autopsy, which will be scheduled for later this week. There are no further details at this time. Updates on this investigation will be provided as information becomes available.”

Missing Woman

Coincidently, law enforcement has been looking for a missing woman, perhaps seen about a week ago in the Petersburgh area. At this time, there is no official connection between this search and the discovery of the body in Stephentown.

Assistance With PFOA Claim Forms in Petersburgh

On Friday, March 4, from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, and Saturday, March 5, from 8:30 am to 4 pm, Steve Schwarz and his legal team will be at the Petersburgh Town Hall, 65 Main St., to help residents fill out their PFOA claim forms and answer questions.

Tom Berry Appointed to Petersburgh Town Board

At its January meeting, the Petersburgh Town Board took up the question of appointing someone to the vacant Town Board seat that was created when Katie Murray resigned it in order to take the Supervisor position. The position was advertised in The Eastwick Press on December 24, and the Town received two letters of interest from citizens interested in serving on the Town Board. These were Tom Berry and Deidra Michaels. Both have a great deal of experience in Town government, as Berry served two years on the Town Board and Michaels was the Town Clerk for many years. PFAS Study in Hoosick Falls and Petersburgh

Village and Town will be Part of Multi-Site PFOA Study

The New York State Department of Health and the University at Albany School of Public Health have announced that residents in the Hoosick Falls area (including Petersburgh) are invited to take part in a national Multi-Site PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) Health Study. This by-invitation-only effort seeks to recruit eligible adults and families who will then be invited for a health clinic visit for blood and urine testing along with a health evaluation to measure exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The study will also collect information about the immune response, lipid metabolism, kidney function, thyroid disease, liver disease, glycemic parameters and diabetes. In return, confidential test results will be provided to participants at no cost to them. Recruitment for participants in the Hoosick Falls/Petersburgh area is expected to begin in February.

“New York State is collaborating with some of the best researchers in the country to collect data from participants with common exposures,” said New York State Department of Health Acting Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett. “What we learn by working with these researchers could provide important clues about the complex relationship between PFAS exposures through drinking water and human health outcomes.”

A Community Advisory Panel (CAP), made up of unpaid individuals from Hoosick Falls and Petersburgh as well as other communities, is a critical partner in this study. Members relay community questions and concerns and encourage community outreach and participation. They also help advise researchers on study design, outreach and progress.

John T. Bossoni – Obituary

Petersburgh – John Thomas Bossoni, 87, a resident of Rabbit College Road, passed away December 30, 2021 at his home. John was born in Brooklyn, on February 10, 1934. He was the son of the late Frank and Lillian (Webb) Bossoni and attended local schools. John worked as a Sergeant for the NYPD for 20 years, retiring in 1977. Upon retirement he moved to Petersburgh, where he owned and operated a real estate business for over 40 years. He served his country as a member of the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed playing chess, playing his guitar and loved salt water fishing. He enjoyed watching cowboy movies, especially John Wayne, listening to country and classical music and spending time with his family. John is survived by his wife Anne Philibosian Bossoni of Petersburgh, NY, his children, Jonathan Bossoni of Petersburgh, NY, Susan Barry (Paul) of Saratoga, NY and Holly Rosenberg (Paul) of Florida, as well as six grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Ruth “Penny” Quiles in November 2016. A Mass of Christian Death and Burial will be celebrated Friday, January 7, 2022 at 11 am at Sacred Heart St. Francis deSales Catholic Church in Bennington. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hoosick Falls. Drainage Work at Petersburgh Landfill Completed

Tom Berry said the drainage improvement work designed by the Town’s engineer to keep water runoff out of the landfill as much as possible has been completed by the Berlin and Petersburgh highway departments. “All water drainage issues have been resolved,” said Berry. He said Mark Millspaugh, the engineer from Sterling Environmental, visited the site and inspected the work when it was completed, and he will communicate with DEC about the completion of this phase of the work.
