Local 4-H Participation In The Schaghticoke Fair

Labor Day to many in the area is synonymous with the Great Schaghticoke Fair. This couldn’t be truer for roughly 300 Rensselaer County 4-H members who participate at the Fair. 4-H is much more than cows and cookies, even though we see plenty of those at the fair. 4-H is all about growing kids!

Grafton Man Is New Chief Of County Corrections

Literacy Volunteers Announces Daytime Tutor Training For Fall 2013

A series of daytime tutor training workshops will begin on Monday, November 4, at the East Greenbush Community Library. Each session will run from 12:30 to 3:30 pm. Anyone interested in attending this training is requested to attend an information session on Thursday, October 10, from 12:30 to 1:30 pm at the offices of Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County, located on the third floor of the First United Presbyterian Church, 1915 5th Avenue, Troy. To reserve a place, call 518-274-8526.
For 45 years Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County has recruited and trained volunteers to provide individual and small group tutoring. A professional staff supports volunteers who make the programs run. We are an affiliate of Literacy New York and accredited by ProLiteracy America. To learn more, visit www.lvorc.org.

The Emerald Ash Borer Comes To Stephentown

The emerald ash borer, the beetle that has destroyed over 50 million ash trees in the United States, has been discovered in Stephentown. The New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) found the beetles in the purple cardboard traps hung in trees just south and west of Stephentown center. In this wood gathering season, DEC is urging area residents to identify ash wood and not move it. Residents should not purchase or accept ash from Stephentown

Fatal Fire On Plank Road

Yvonne Keefe, spokesperson for the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office, reported that the Sheriff’s Office responded to a fatal house fire on Plank Road at approximately 10:10 pm on Sunday night, September 15. Fire Departments from Poestenkill, Wynantskill, Eagle Mills and Mt. View responded. Investigators from the Rensselaer County Fire Investigation Unit have determined the fire to be accidental.
Officials found the body of Devin Hover, age 29, in the home that was destroyed by the fire last night. The parents, John Hover and Georgia Hover, also in the home were transported to Albany Medical Center for treatment.

Brunswick Grange Tailgate Sale

On Sunday, October 6, the Brunswick Grange will   hold   its   Annual   Fall  Agricultural  Tailgate  Sale  at  the Schaghticoke Fairgrounds, Routes 67 & 40, Schaghticoke, from 8 am to 12:30 pm. More than 50 vendors will have various varieties of chickens,  ducks, geese, pigeons, vegetables, plants, flowers and other agricultural items. Absolutely no dogs, cats, puppys or kittens will be allowed  for  sale. A  donation  of $15 per vendor will be charged.

Rensselaer Land Trust Event

A Rensselaer Land Trust Event entitled “A Decisive Day in the History of Our Country” will take place on Saturday, September 28, from 9 am to 4 pm. Revolutionary War Historian Charles W. Filkins, II, Director of the Louis Miller Museum, will lead us for a day of history in beautiful northeastern Rensselaer County at the Bennington Battlefield. Learn about the context of the battle in Hoosick that led to the British surrender at Saratoga in October of 1777 and ultimately to the success of our revolution. Hear about the Hessians Baum and Breymann and their march to Hoosick. After the tour of the battlefield, those who wish, will continue on to Bennington, VT, and visit the monument that commemorates this turning point in the Revolutionary War.
