Free Bird Nesting Boxes

The Rensselaer Plateau Alliance has bluebird and wood duck nesting boxes available to the public for free. In 2011, the RPA collaborated with Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center and the Averill Park School District to build the boxes. Fourth grade students from Miller Hill Elementary School and Robert C. Parker school worked with older students to build the boxes as part of a service learning project. Ties To The Land

A facilitated workshop on succession planning to help keep family forests and farms in the family will be held on February 11, from 9 am to 4:30 pm at the Petersburgh Veteran’s Memorial Community Center, 71 Main Street, Petersburgh.
Few challenges that family forestland owners, farmers, ranchers and other land-based family businesses face are more important than the issue of passing the land and its responsibilities on to the next generation. Many small landowners want to preserve their family lands but don’t know how to involve family members in ownership and operation of their land.

Native American Sites In Rensselaer County

Warren Broderick will present an illustrated talk on Native American sites in Rensselaer County to the Stephentown Historical Society on Monday, February 6, at 7:30 pm. The meeting will be at the Stephentown Heritage Center on Garfield Road in Stephentown. It is free and open to the public. The building is handicapped accessible. Local Farms Receive Farmland Protection

Members of the Rensselaer County Legislature welcomed the completion of three farmland protection projects, with more than 1,200 acres combined protected for future generations, Majority Leader Ken Herrington and Legislator Alex Shannon announced.
The farmland protection efforts include farms in the towns of Pittstown, Hoosick and Petersburgh, along with some acreage in the Washington County town of Jackson. State, County and local officials joined representatives from the Agricultural Stewardship Association today in announcing completion of the lengthy process required to protect properties.

4-H Pre-Teen Fun Day

A day of Science for Rensselaer County Youth in grades k-6 will take place on Saturday, February 18, from 9:30 am to 2 pm at the Brittonkill/ Tamarac Middle School. 4-H Teens will engage youth in five different recycling activities to ensure they walk away with new ideas of how and what to recycle and the importance of recycling.

Bev Freemantle Receives President’s Volunteer Service Award

Some people can never do enough for other people. Bev Freemantle of Pittstown is one of those people. Many years ago Bev retired from the telephone company with 30 years of service. While she worked she was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the largest industry related volunteer organization in the world. She still volunteers with the Pioneers. Her group has made playground maps, put together health kits for the homeless and twice a year serves meals at Joseph’s House & Shelter in Troy.
