The annual Veterans Day Celebration at the Veterans Memorial Park in Stephentown will honor in particular this year those veterans who served during World War II. The Celebration will be held on Saturday, November 10, starting at 11 am. All are invited to a spaghetti dinner afterward at the Stephentown Fire Hall from 12:30 to 2 pm. A good will offering will be accepted. Shut-ins can arrange for home delivery by calling 658-2448 by noon, November 9.

• Halloween Party – The Stephentown Youth Commission and the Stephentown Memorial Library invite you to a Halloween Party at the Library on Saturday, October 27, at 2:30 pm. There will be lots of fun activities, including pumpkin painting, crafts, stories, songs and yummy refreshments. We will also be showing the movie, “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.” Children are encouraged to wear their costumes or bring them along to change into them. Stephentown Texas Hold’em
The Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, October 22, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located at 35 Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5:30 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.
A free buffet will be served at the first break, and refreshments will be available.
No advance registration is required, and a donation of $35 per player will be accepted. Players can make an additional $10 donation at the door for 1,000 extra chips. This tournament will pay one place for every ten players with a minimum of four places and a maximum of 9 places.

Stephentown Town Board Action – Budgeting Underway

There wasn’t much happening at the Stephentown Town Board meeting on Monday evening, but the Board has been wrestling with a proposed budget for 2013, and there was some discussion around that. Town Supervisor Larry Eckhardt reported that the Board had been up late the previous week at a workshop meeting “pounding the numbers.” Although the Board could override the State mandated 2% cap with a simple majority vote, he said that they are making every effort to adhere to that cap. A Stephentown Firefighter Suffers Smoke Inhalation At Powder Hounds Fire

Seven fire companies responded to a fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon at the Powder Hounds Restaurant situated at the base of Jiminy Peak. Hancock, MA, Fire Chief David Rash said that the fire of unknown origin started about 2 pm. By 4 pm the fire was under control, but firefighters were still in the process of dousing hot spots. Rash expected they would continue to do so into the night hours.

Berlin And Stephentown Youth Celebrate National 4-H Week

October 7-13 is National 4-H Week, and Rensselaer County is celebrating the 4-H youth who have made an impact on the community and who are stepping up to the challenges of a complex and changing world. On October 9 at the Berlin Free Town Library, 4-H youth had a display featuring the local Stephentown/Berlin 4-H club. They also plan to connect with the community later in the month by planting daffodils in each of the Veterans Memorial gardens located in Stephentown and Berlin.

Stephentown Memorial Library Cabaret Benefit – A Great Success
Berkshires-based cabaret performer Lisa Kantor enchanted her audience at the Stephentown Memorial Library benefit “You Read Me Like a Book!” on September 28 at The Theater Barn in New Lebanon. Lisa and her trio shifted moods and styles of love and love-gone-wrong songs for the enjoyment of a full house of Library supporters.
The Friends of the Library report that the evening raised about $7,000 for the Library, thanks to the support of ticket buyers, advertisers and donors. They offer special thanks to Lisa, The Theater Barn, Hudson-Chatham Winery, Danforth Printing, Harry & David and Lindor Truffles by Lindt for their generous donations. Because of enthusiastic community support and the success of the evening, the Friends are looking forward to a repeat performance next fall.

Stephentown Man Stabs His Brother
from the NY State Police
The New York State Police out of Schodack arrested Christopher Beckwith, 28, of Stephentown for Assault 1st and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd, both felonies.
At approximately 4 am on Saturday, September 22, State Police responded to a 911 call at a Sutherland Road address in the town of Stephentown for a reported disturbance and learned that a person had been stabbed with a knife. The subsequent investigation revealed that Christopher Beckwith and his brother Jacob Beckwith, 33, also of Stephentown, had gotten into a verbal argument at a party at the Sutherland Road address.
