On July 12, the coffin containing Melvin “Bud” Ketchum was transported to the Hancock Cemetery on a wagon drawn by tractor from Larry Eckhardt’s Kinderhook Creek Farm on South Stephentown Road where Bud had been a mainstay of the farm hands for many years. Stephentown Historical Society’s 31st Annual Strawberry Festival

Mostly sunny skies, a light breeze and temperatures in the 70s provided ideal weather for the Stephentown Historical Society’s 31st Annual Strawberry Festival on Sunday, June 24, at The Berry Patch on Route 22. Ten people had picked 120 pounds of strawberries; seven people had hulled them; several people baked homemade biscuits and strawberry-rhubarb pies, and a dozen more served the delicacies. By the end of the five hour festival around 175 people had enjoyed strawberries, shortcake, ice cream, homemade pie and chocolate-covered strawberries under the tent. July Events At The Stephentown Library
• Free Daily Lunch for Kids – We are pleased to have been chosen as an open feeding site through this federally funded lunch program. We will be serving a healthy bag lunch each weekday from 12 to 1 pm in the community room. There is no charge and no income or residency requirement. No Preregistration is required. All children 18 and under are encouraged to take advantage of this program. Children under 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The program will run until August 17, Monday through Friday.
• Story Time – Wednesdays at 10 am. Calling all preschoolers (and their caregivers)! Join us each Wednesday for some story time fun! In this half hour session, we read aloud, sing songs, move about and explore the world around us through literature. Parents and children are encouraged to stay after story time so children have time for free play while grown-ups browse for books and socialize. Story Time is led by Rebekkah Corbett, a local educator and member of the SML staff.

Scott Paterson Earns Degree From SUNY New Paltz
The State University of New York at New Paltz recently conferred over 200 graduate degrees. Scott Paterson, a resident of Stephentown, was among the university’s graduates. Paterson received a Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in School Business Leadership.
Megan Coleman Receives Book Award
Megan Coleman of Stephentown, and a student at Berlin Central School, was named the 2012 recipient of the Saint Michael’s College Book Award for Academic Achievement with a Social Conscience. The award recognizes students who demonstrate a commitment to leadership in volunteer service and academic achievement.
Award recipients, named at schools throughout the country, are high school juniors who are inductees of the National Honor Society or an equivalent school-sponsored honors organization. Coleman was presented the book First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers (HarperCollins 2000) by Loung Ung, a 1993 Saint Michael’s College graduate who has become a widely acclaimed author.

Proposed Motocross Still Under Review By The Stephentown ZBA

Howard Commander’s proposed Motocross project continues its slow journey through the State Environmental Quality Review (SEQR) system. Commander’s team submitted their completed draft Environmental Impact Statement to the Stephentown Zoning Board of Appeals on June 22. The Board has 45 days to determine whether the document is adequate for public review. If deemed adequate there will be a minimum 30 day period for public comment and possibly a public hearing if the Board so decides.

Texas Hold’em In Stephentown
The Veterans of Stephentown and the Stephentown Fire Department will sponsor a joint Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, July 14, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located at 35 Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.
