A public hearing on Howard Commander’s proposed motocross project drew a good-sized crowd of over 60 people to the Stephentown Town Hall on Thursday, January 5. The Zoning Board of Appeals, chaired by Roland Barth and comprising also Joseph Champion, Peter Ellard and Richard Sime, with Freling Smith absent, listened to arguments pro and con prior to opening SEQR proceedings. The SEQR (State Environmental Quality Review) process will determine the environmental impacts of the motocross track that Commander proposes for a field off of Webster Hill Road in the southwest corner of the town.

Stephentown Texas Hold’em
The Veterans of Stephentown will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, January 14, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located at 37 Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.

Stephentown – Francis A. Martini, 76, of Wilderness Way, Stephentown, NY, died on Monday, January 2, 2012, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, NY. Born in Pittsfield, MA, on September 10, 1935, he was the son of the late Anthony and Rose Stracuzzi Martini. A 1953 graduate of Pittsfield High School where he excelled in football and baseball, Fran had been a resident of Stephentown for the past twenty years after living in New Lebanon for eleven years.

With Beacon Power in bankruptcy proceedings and required to sell off their frequency regulation plant on Grange Hall Road, Stephentown residents are wondering how the situation will affect the Town. It was a topic of some discussion at Monday’s Town Board meeting. Town Supervisor Larry Eckhardt said he had attended a meeting about the bankruptcy recently with Beacon and NYSERDA officials. He expressed some bewilderment about the pressure being placed on the company by the federal Department of Energy (DOE). Stephentown Book Group January Meeting
The Stephentown Library Book Discussion Group will read House Rules by Jodi Picoult for its meeting on Thursday, January 5. Jacob, a teenager with asperger’s syndrome, is obsessed with forensic analysis and accused of murder. The book explores the intolerance and misunderstanding that he and his mother and brother endure as the case develops and goes to trial.
Meetings are held in the Community Room at the Stephentown Memorial Library, Main Street, Stephentown, from noon to 1 pm. Bring a lunch if you like. Copies of the book are available at the library desk. New readers are always welcome. For more information, call 518-733-5750.
