Route 43 Shut Down Will Add To Commuter Delays

Due to road construction on NYS Route 2, Grafton folks have been finding it a slow go lately getting to destinations in the Albany/Troy area. Stephentown commuters can soon join the club. As of Monday, August 15, the State Transportation Department (NYSDOT) will shut down a stretch of Route 43 to replace a large culvert near Reno Road in the Town of Nassau. The road at that spot got washed out by the flooding that occurred in the summer of 2009 and was temporarily repaired.

Stephentown Flywheel Failure Still A Mystery

Beacon Power CEO Bill Capp, speaking to investors on Tuesday at a presentation of the company’s second quarter financial results, made mention of the flywheel failure that occurred in their Stephentown plant on July 27. Capp said that with all the flywheels operating in a 20 megawatt frequency regulation plant, it is assumed that there will be a limited number of failures and funds have been set aside to deal with that. Cub Scout Sign Up

The Cub Scout Pack 911 will be holding a sign up for new and returning scouts at the Stephentown Town Hall on Monday, August 22, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm.  Cub Scouts is open for boys in first through fifth grade. Please call Samantha Bink with any questions at 733-6729.

• Free Daily Lunch & Snack for Kids – We are pleased to have been chosen as a feeding site through this federally funded lunch program. We will be serving a healthy bag lunch each weekday from 12 to 1 pm in the community room. From 3 to 3:30 pm we will serve a snack. There is no charge and no income or residency requirement. All children under age 18 are encouraged to take advantage of this program. Children under 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The program will run until August 19, Monday through Friday.

Tsatsawassa Pig Roast

On Saturday, August 20, the Tsatsawassa Protective Fire Company Inc. will hold its 23rd Annual Pig Roast on the Fire House grounds located just off Route 20 in the hamlet of Brainard. Doors will open at 1 pm, and the afternoon will be filled with fun events including door prizes and games as well as hot dogs, sausage, hamburgers and drinks. All the while the whole pig covered with foil, will be roasting on the spit in view of the attendees.

Texas Hold’em In Stephentown

The Veterans of Stephentown  and the Stephentown Fire Department will sponsor a joint Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, August 20, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located on Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.

Stephentown Eagle Scout Service Project Helps Battered Women

“He put his heart and soul into it – thought of everything – amazing – it restores your faith in humanity – great job!” These were some of the comments from the Elizabeth Freeman Center women’s shelter about Chris Muller’s Eagle Scout service project. Linda Strassell, Benefits Coordinator at the Pittsfield, MA, shelter was very enthusiastic in her praise of Muller and his project that provided care packages for the clients of the Center, many of whom arrive at the shelter battered, distraught and with only the clothes on their back and, more often than not, with one or more kids in tow.

Alex Bassallo Promoted To 3rd Degree Black Belt

Alex Bassallo from Babcock Lake Road in Grafton was recently promoted to 3rd Degree Black Belt in a ceremony held at the Stephentown Town Hall. Bassallo’s rank is recognized by the following organizations: John Izzo’s Okinawan Karate, Stephentown Self Defense Systems and Green Island Academy Of Martial Arts.
