County Legislators Seek Safety Review Of State Route 7

At its regular meeting on Tuesday, July 12, the Rensselaer County Legislature passed a resolution asking the NYS Department of Transportation (DOT) to review the safety conditions on a section of State Route 7 between the Bennington Battlefield Motel (4328 Rt. 7) and the intersection of Routes 7 and 22 in the Town of Hoosick. Over the years this stretch of road, with its sweeping high speed curves, necessitated because the road runs along a winding trout stream, has been the scene of numerous accidents. DEC Concerns Delay Motocross Project Until September

With the State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) introducing new complexities, deliberations on a zoning variance for Howard Commander’s Motocross project will now be delayed at least until September. At the Stephentown Zoning Board meeting on July 7 Commander’s attorney, Francis Roach, indicated that it would take their consulting engineer, Pat Prendergast, some time to respond to DEC’s concerns so that their application would probably not be ready until September.

50th Reunion Of The BCS Class Of 1961

On June 4, Bonita Maxon, Sylvia Thompson and Connie Goodermote planned a picnic which was held at the home of Bonita Maxon at the Dyken Pond. One third of our class met; some spouses attended. We had an enjoyable time meeting classmates that we had not seen since graduation 50 years ago. We held a raffle, shared much memorabilia and life experiences.

Stephentown Texas Hold’em

The Veterans of Stephentown  and the Stephentown Fire Department will sponsor a joint Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, July 16, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located on Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.

Stephentown – Joan Linda Huls, 68, passed away July 5, 2011, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Pittsfield, MA, Joan was the beloved daughter of William F. and Floy M. Hall. She was raised in Stephentown, NY, and attended New Lebanon Central School. Joan was a member of the National Honor Society, graduating in 1959 at the age of 16.

Stephentown Historical Society’s Annual Strawberry Festival

The Stephentown Historical Society’s 30th Annual Strawberry Festival, held at The Berry Patch on Sunday, June 26, featured strawberry shortcake with freshly picked strawberries, ice cream and homemade biscuits. Volunteers provided homemade strawberry rhubarb pies that were sold as a whole pie or by the slice. Volunteers also picked 214 pounds of berries on Thursday night between the thunder storms, and yet more volunteers spent a good part of Friday hulling and cleaning.

Stephentown Historical Society Potluck Dinner

The summer potluck dinner meeting of the Stephentown Historical Society will be Monday, July 11, at 6:30 pm at the Stephentown Heritage Center, Garfield Road (County Route 26), Stephentown. Those attending should bring a hearty appetite and a dish large enough to share, either main dish, salad or dessert. Plates, utensils and beverages will be provided.
