Stephentown To Review Land Use Regs
by David Flint
Following a moment of silence in respect for Martin Luther King, a public hearing was held prior to the regular Stephentown Town Board meeting on Monday, January 17 regarding proposed Local Law #1 of 2011 on Fee Reimbursement. The intent of the law, as Town Supervisor Larry Eckhardt put it, is to solidify and spell out existing provisions of the Town’s land use and subdivision regulations that require reimbursement to the Town for legal and engineering fees incurred in the process of reviewing and approving plans and designs of developers by the Town Board, Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals. Correction Of Stephentown FD Installation Story
In our story about the Stephentown Fire Department Installation Dinner in last week’s issue (January 14), we erroneously referred to Henry Zwack as the father of newly installed Fire Chief, Joseph Zwack. As everyone knows, Henry is Joey’s uncle. Joseph Zwack is the son of proud parents Frank and Debbie Zwack. We apologize to the Zwacks for the error.
In the same story, we also goofed on the Active Service Awards and inadvertently took ten years off the service of Tammy Madden and Steve Whitman. Tammy and Steve were recognized for achieving 25 years of service, not 15 years as we reported. Congratulations and our apologies to both.

Stephentown ZBA Is Lead Agency On Motocross Park
by David Flint
Stephentown’s Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) has some new faces. At their Organizational Meeting last week the Town Board appointed Peter Ellard to fill a vacancy left by the resignation in November of Jack Liebenow. Ellard, a 12-year resident of Stephentown residing on Newton Road, is a professor of environmental ethics at Siena College where he is also Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Another vacancy occurred as a result of Robert Mittnight’s term expiring at the end of 2010. The Town Board chose Freling Smith to fill that seat. Smith, who has served on the Planning Board since January 2007, will be resigning from that position.

Sporty Stephentown Fire Department Installation
by David Flint
Sports was the theme at the Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department Installation Dinner last Saturday evening. People came dressed in sweat shirts with their favorite team names and logos. There was much good natured bantering between Red Sox fans and Yankees fans. Tammy Madden was seen tooling a remote controlled NASCAR vehicle all around the floor of the Fire Hall. And the local Girl Scouts had done up place mats for each table setting, each one, hand drawn, depicting a scene related to soccer, baseball, basketball, football or other sport.
