“Words from the Hills,” a monthly event at the Stephentown Library for those who share a love of finely crafted words, will be Sunday, September 12, at 3 pm. It is a roundtable for sharing poetry, short stories and narratives.
Both writers and readers are invited to participate, sharing their writings or perhaps reading from another author’s book, poem, short story or even something they may have found on the internet. The source is not important; sharing words which are meaningful or entertaining is.

Sand Lake Bicentennial Dinner Celebration
A dinner to celebrate the Town of Sand Lake’s upcoming 2012 Bicentennial will be held at The Church of the Covenant in Averill Park on September 18 at 5:45 pm. The dinner menu and theme have an historic emphasis. The program will be a PowerPoint® presentation of the Troy & New England Railway booklet completed by Charles Viens and Sanford Young. On display will be a scale model of Trolley No. 6 being constructed by Ross Sterantino.

Dissension In The Stephentown Fire Dept.

Jamieson Pelletier’s expulsion from the Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department this past March is still a source of major dissension in the ranks. The sticking point for many seems to be that the membership still does not know for sure why he was expelled. They also believe that, just as in a recent episode with the Stephentown Zoning Board, due process and governing regulations – in this case, the SVFD Bylaws – were not followed.

DEC Kills Moose
Moose Mixed With Cows

A yearling moose began hanging out at the end of July with the cows on the farm of Leo and Janette Roberts on Newton Road in Stephentown. Leo said it wasn’t bothering anybody. But the animal looked a bit scruffy – it may have been molting – and it seemed to have no fear of humans. So people who observed it began to wonder if there was something wrong with it and eventually the Department of Environmental Conservation was called to come have a look.

Letter To The Editor – Neither Snow Nor Rain…Really?
To the Editor:
On June 30, 2010, we received a folded/stapled paper in our mailbox. This letter was sent by the Postmaster of the Stephentown Post Office. It informed us that the Post Office was “making us aware of hazards and unsafe conditions in the approach of our mailbox and roads.” This letter continued to state that “they value our safety and the safety of our letter carriers.” Also, “The Post Office is very concerned about the condition of your road.” The letter ends, “If we do not have this issue resolved by July 30, 2010, we have no choice but to hold your mail at the Post Office. Afghanistan Is Topic At Stephentown Book Group
Learn more about life in Afghanistan at the Stephentown Memorial Library Book Club meeting on Tuesday, September 7, at 7 pm featuring guest speaker J. Thalia Cunningham, M.D., FACEP. Dr. Cunningham, an emergency physician, travel writer and playwright, will discuss her experiences in Afghanistan, which she has visited seven times. She will join the group in discussing Back to Afghanistan: My Journey from California to Kabul by Said Hyder Akbar, which provides some background for the discussion. The public is cordially invited to attend the meeting.

The Veterans of Stephentown will start the fall season off with a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, September 11, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located on Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.
