Knife Sharpening In Malden Bridge

Do you need outside tools sharpened before putting them away for the season or a knife made ready to carve that holiday ham? Come to the Malden Bridge Community Center at 1087 Albany Turnpike on Saturday, December 6, when the services of the Delmar Knife Sharpener will be available to handle the sharpening for you.

Rates range from $3 and up for knives and other kitchen cutters while garden items range from $5 and up and includes pruning clippers, hedge trimmers, etc.

You may bring your possessions starting at 10 am and leave them with an approximate time in the afternoon for pick up and cost given before you leave. No items will be taken after 2 pm in order to allow time for all items to be sharpened and picked up. In the event of a storm the event will be postponed until Saturday, December 13. Stephentown Community Christmas Tree Lighting

Stephentown’s annual Community Christmas Tree Lighting and Carol Sing-a-Long will be held on Sunday, December 14, at 7 pm in the Veterans Park with refreshments immediately following at the Fire Hall on Grange Hall Road. Everyone is welcome.

Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department Texas Hold’em

The Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, November 1, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located at 35 Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5:30 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.

No advance registration is required. A donation of $35 per player will be accepted and give the player 6,000 in chip value. Players can make an additional $10 donation at the door for 2,000 extra in chip value. This tournament will pay one place for every ten players with a minimum of four places and a maximum of nine places.

A free buffet will be served at the first break, and refreshments will be available.

Author Event At The Stephentown Library

On Thursday, November 20, at 7 pm the public is invited to kick off the holiday season with a reading of Inventing Scrooge by Carlo DeVito. The event will include a reading from the book and discussion with the author. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. Refreshments will be served.

Bell Park Cookie Contest, Celebration And Chinese Auction

Have you ever wanted your favorite cookie recipe published in a book? Well here is your chance! The Village of East Nassau is holding a Cookie Contest and Celebration at the Hoags Corners Firehouse on Sunday, November 16, at 2 pm. A highlight of the afternoon will be sharing the cookies that are submitted as well as your chance to win items in the Chinese Auction that will be held during the “judging” of the cookies.

Details of the Cookie Contest and the official entry form may be obtained from the website villageofeastnassau.org/cookie. The $10 per recipe entry fee includes a ticket to the celebration. Applications are also available at the Country Store on Route 20 in Brainard. All recipes submitted to the contest will be published in a cookie cookbook, which will be available before the holidays.

Event tickets cost $5 and proceeds will support the construction of the Bell Park in Brainard, including the installation of the bell from the former United Methodist Church. Refreshments (cookies!) and good humor will be served during the celebration which will culminate with the naming of the Official 2015 Cookie of the Village of East Nassau.

Woods Forum Nov. 18 In Stephentown

Then attend a Woods Forum conducted by the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance (RPA) on Tuesday, November 18, at 7 pm at the Stephentown Historical Society, 5 Staples Road, on the corner of Staples Road and Garfield Nassau Road in Stephentown. Join fellow woodland owners and forestry professionals for a discussion on how to maintain the value of your woods for timber harvesting, recreation, wildlife and for future generations. Discuss how to care for your woods today and plan for its future. Talk with and hear about the experiences of other landowners. Attendees will receive a copy of the new Guide for Landowners intended to help landowners find information in the recently published Rensselaer Plateau Regional Conservation Plan that is useful to them. Bruce A. Stevens

Mechanicville/Stephentown – Bruce Arthur Stevens, 77, formerly of Stephentown, NY, died Wednesday, November 5, 2014, at Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY. Born at his grandparents home in Stephentown on February 14, 1937, he was the son of the late Arthur J. and Florence Hoffman Stevens. He attended Stephentown Grade School and was a 1956 graduate of Berlin High School. He attended his 50th class reunion in 2006.

Wesley Edwards Retirement Reception

“I don’t think there’s another one in the State,” said Dennis Quinn, President of the New York State Magistrates Association when presenting a 50 year service pin to Wesley Edwards. The occasion was a retirement reception held at the Stephentown Fire Hall on Sunday, November 2, to honor Edwards, who at the end of the year will step down from the bench, having completed actually 51 years as judge in Stephentown.

A Guide To Online Grant Seeker Resources At The Stephentown Memorial Library

Learn to navigate and use the wide range of resources made available by the Foundation Center. The Stephentown Memorial Library will host a free workshop for nonprofit organizations that will introduce you to the resources made available by the Foundation Center – Grantspace, Foundation Directory Online and Foundation Maps. The workshop will be held Monday, November 10, from 11:30 am to 1 pm.

The session will be led by Julieta Mendez, Engagement & Outreach Specialist, Social Sector Outreach with the Foundation Center (http://foundationcenter.org). This class will show you how to get the most out of the Foundation Center’s online resources to help you gain the knowledge and skills you need to get grants, manage your nonprofit and improve your community. Mendez will offer tips on how best to identify funding sources for your organization, highlighting the electronic and print resources available for your free use at the Stephentown Memorial Library, a Funding Information Network partner of the Foundation Center.

The workshop will include a demonstration of Foundation Directory Online, the Foundation Center’s top tier searchable database providing information on nearly 100,000 grant makers and more than 2 million grant records and will provide an overview of the free resources on the Foundation Center’s web site.

A light lunch will be served, and there will be ample time for individual questions. There is limited seating so reservations required. Please call the Stephentown Memorial Library at 518-733-5750 or email director@stephentownlibrary.org to reserve a space.
