NYSDOT Schedules Route 22 Repaving

In a letter dated February 25, Acting Regional Director of the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Sam Zhou responded to the Rensselaer County Legislature’s letter of February 3 prioritizing improvements to New York State routes within the County. Zhou’s letter says, “In consideration of your letter and after careful consideration and a review of available funding, I am pleased to let you know that we are scheduled to begin paving on Route 22 and Route 20 in the coming 2014 construction season. Route 22 will be paved from the Columbia County line north, 9.4 miles, to Cherry Plain. We are proposing to pave from Cherry Plain to Petersburgh in 2015.”

Stephentown Town Board Action – Bert Hager Road Bridge To be Replaced

Bids for constructing a new bridge on Bert Hager Road were opened prior to the start of the regular Stephentown Town Board meeting on Monday. Six bids were received ranging from $248,589 from Stephen Miller General Contractors Inc. out of Mayfield, NY, up to $317,700 from New Century Construction based in Watervliet. Upcoming Events At The Stephentown Library

• Friday, March 21, at 6:30 pm – Family Movie Night. Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Come to the Stephentown Memorial Library for a great family movie. This month we are showing a newly released animated film about two sisters who live in a castle surrounded by winter. The movie is rated PG, and the running time is 102 minutes. Free popcorn and drinks will be served.

• Wednesday, March 26, at 1:30 pm – Computers for Beginners Class. This class is for anyone just beginning to learn how to use a computer. We will briefly go over the physical computer parts, how to turn the computer on and off, the desktop, Start menu and how Windows® works. We will also spend time learning how to use the mouse. Depending on time and interest, the class may move forward to internet use and email. If you know someone who will benefit from this class, help spread the word and invite them to join.

• Tuesday, April 1, at 6:30 pm – Parenting Course begins. This six week class will meet on April 1, 8 and 22 and May 6, 13and 20. Participants should plan to attend all sessions in the class cycle. Led by Bruce Weiner, the class introduces the Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) method of parenting and will consist of the basics tenets of Parent Effectiveness Training, the positive character education focus on problem solving with children and other issues brought up by parents during the course. The only cost will be $15 for course workbooks, and this can be waived for those with financial need. All parents or other caregivers are invited to join us for this helpful class. Reservations are required, as space for this class is limited. Please call the Stephentown Memorial Library at 518-733-5750 to reserve a space.

Stephentown Memorial Library Scholarship

The Stephentown Memorial Library is offering one scholarship to a graduating senior who will enter a two or four year college in the Fall. Applicants for the Stephentown Memorial Library Scholarship must be a resident of Stephentown. Applications are available at the Library and at the Guidance Offices of local public and private schools attended by Stephentown students.

The scholarship fund results from gifts and bequests made to the Library specifically for scholarship purposes.

The application deadline is May 23.

Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department Texas Hold’em

The Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, March 29, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located at 35 Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5:30 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.

No advance registration is required. A donation of $35 per player will be accepted and give the player 6,000 in chip value. Players can make an additional $10 donation at the door for 2,000 extra in chip value. This tournament will pay one place for every 10 players with a minimum of four places and a maximum of 9 places.

A free buffet will be served at the first break, and refreshments will be available.

Stephentown Book Group News

The Stephentown Library Book Discussion Group has changed its meeting times for the convenience of more readers. It will meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 1:30 pm. Meetings are held in the Community Room at the Stephentown Memorial Library, Main Street, Stephentown.

The next meeting will be March 18. The Light Between Oceans, M. L. Stedman’s first novel, will be discussed. Set in post WW I Australia, it is the well told story of a lighthouse keeper and his wife who make a choice that shatters many lives, including their own when a boat washed up on their remote island brings a dead man and a baby.

Copies of the book are available at the Library desk. New readers are always welcome. For more information, call 518-733-5750.

Berlin Elementary PTO Scholarship

The Berlin Elementary PTO Scholarship award will be presented to a graduating senior who plans to enter a two or four year college, the Armed Forces or a Technical School in the fall.  Two $250 scholarships will be awarded to the class of 2014, 2015 and 2016 from funds the Stephentown PTO had prior to its closure.  Students will be awarded the scholarship based of the evaluation rubric.

Eligibility:  Applicants must be a current senior in high school or home-schooled in the Berlin School District. Applications are available at the Guidance office at the Berlin Middle/High School. Completed applications should be returned to the Guidance Office by May 5.  No late applications will be accepted.
