Stephentown Fire Department Texas Hold’em

The Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department  will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, January 25, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located at 35 Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5:30 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.

No advance registration is required. A donation of $35 per player will be accepted and give the player 6,000 in chip value. Players can make an additional $10 donation at the door for 2,000 extra in chip value. This tournament will pay one place for every 10 players with a minimum of four places and a maximum of 9 places.

A free buffet will be served at the first break and refreshments will be available.

Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department Installation Dinner

The Fire Hall, sporting a new grand entry way, fresh paint on the walls and gaily decorated in red white and blue, was ready Saturday night for the Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department’s 2014 Installation Dinner. The Stephentown Memorial Library Presents How To Use A Tablet

On Monday, January 13, at 6:30 pm at the Stephentown Memorial Library there will be a program on learning the basics of how to use a tablet. Have your questions answered by a computer expert. Instruction will cover Android® and iPads®. This class will cover downloading and managing apps and the differences between the Apple and Google® ecosystems. Instructor Nathan Hans will also share tips and tricks he has found. Please register at the front desk or by calling SML at 733-5750.

Local Students Named To Fall 2013 President’s List at Hudson Valley Community College

A number of local students were recently named to the President’s List at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy for the Fall 2013 academic term.

Each fall and spring term, the College’s President’s List honors those students who have a term grade point average between 3.5 and 4.0. Local students include:

A Newly Remodeled Concept Cumberland Farms In Sand Lake

The grand opening of Cumberland Farms’ newly remodeled concept store at 8427 Miller Hill Road in Sand Lake is on Wednesday, January 15. The grand opening celebration is for 3:30 pm and will include a ribbon cutting ceremony and feature complimentary bites from Cumberland Farms’ new hot menu offerings including pizza, chicken tenders, mozzarella sticks and more which are perfect for families and individuals on the go. The event, which is open to the public, will kick off a four week fundraiser for Algonquin Middle School in Sand Lake, where 10 cents from every purchase of Cumberland Farms hot coffee will be donated to the school. Representatives from both Cumberland Farms and Algonquin Middle School will be in attendance.

The concept store will provide the neighborhood with a convenient, affordable new option for freshly prepared food, as well as gas. The Cumberland Farms brand now has more than 65 stores in the Albany area.

My old neighbor, Arthur Roberts, died Thanksgiving morning, alone in his house. He was my portal into a time gone by, a time where frugality was the reigning ethic and the country life was the only life a man ever knew. Arthur was a 19th century man living into the 21st century. He was 86, could barely walk at the end, and he was tough as nails.

Stephentown Historical Society Talk On Four Native American Archeological Sites

Andy Krievs will give an illustrated talk on four Native American archeological sites in Rensselaer County on Monday, January 6, at 7:30 pm at the Stephentown Historical Society’s Heritage Center, Garfield Road (County Route 26), Stephentown.  The building is handicapped accessible. For directions, telephone 518-733-0010.

Krievs is Project Director at Hartgen Archeological Associates, Inc., a cultural resource management firm headquartered in Rensselaer.  Within the last fifteen years, they have conducted archeological studies at four Native American sites near the Hudson River in Rensselaer County.  These sites have yielded artifacts and radiocarbon dates indicating a series of Native American occupations ranging from approximately 2500 B.C. to A.D. 1620.  Come and learn about the people who lived in the area in the past.
