After Sandy Hook BCS To Evaluate Security

In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, the Berlin Central School District School Board, at the monthly meeting Tuesday, passed a resolution to completely evaluate the District’s security policies. The resolution passed with all in attendance in favor; Board Member Bev Stewart was absent that night.

BCS Spanish Club Pizza Night

On Monday, December 17, the BCS Spanish Club will be hosting a Pizza Night. You can order pizzas online up until 2:30 on Monday afternoon or starting at 2:30 you can call the high school to place an order for the same price, just $8 for a red or white pizza. Toppings are $1 each. Topping choices include pepperoni, sausage, ham, mushrooms, green peppers, black olives, onions, jalapenos, pineapple and broccoli.  To order online up until 2:30 on Monday, email Karen Day at kday@berlincentral.org. To order by phone after 2:30, call 658-2515 ext. 209. You may eat in or take out. The Spanish students are raising money to help defray the cost of an educational trip to Puerto Rico in April.

BCSD Seeks Input For 21st Century Community Grant

The Berlin Central School District is seeking input from all residents through the use of an online survey. The administrative team is currently writing a grant proposal that could potentially bring resources into the District to support community initiatives such as job training, career readiness, etc. as well as additional staff and activities to support students in our schools. The proposal calls for direct input from the community regarding what are the highest needs and what programming the community would like to see put in place.

Rachel Barnum To Attend The Hugh O’Brien Leadership Seminar

Rachel Barnum, daughter of Amy and Brian Barnum, of Stephentown has been chosen by Berlin High School to attend the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Seminar this summer at RPI in Troy.  Each school in New York sends an outstanding candidate from the sophomore class to attend the Leadership Seminar to represent their high school.
For more than five decades, HOBY has proven to be an education, life-changing experience that provides leadership development skills with a strong focus on community service. Last year, approximately 9,000 of the brightest high school sophomores from across the United States participated in HOBY.

Youth 2 Youth Berlin Teen Event

Youth 2 Youth Berlin will be hosting a holiday teen event on Friday, December 14, at the Berlin Middle School/High School from 7 to 10 pm. Berlin Youth 2 Youth has planned a night with DJ, dancing, games, Wii, prizes and raffles and other activities planned.
Tickets cost $3 in advance, $5 at the door, and include snacks and beverage; pizza will be available to purchase. Tickets can be pre-ordered through the Y2Y Berlin Group, Biffy Cahill by email at BiffyCahill@gmail.com or by calling 518-733-9031, the Main Office at the Berlin Middle/High School and the Stephentown Memorial Library.

BCS Board Agrees To Disagree

The Berlin School Board seems to have arrived at a point where they can agree to disagree. The traditional vote on the Capital Project bond flotation failed to pass at the November 20 meeting with the required two-thirds super majority, just like it always does. The only difference was that the Board members present didn’t even bother to take the time to argue their views; the matter went straight to vote.
“What? No discussion?” asked Board Member Bev Stewart.
Her fellow members sighed as one.
“Just kidding,” said Stewart.

Beauty And The Beast This Weekend At Berlin Central

The Berlin Music Department will present “Beauty And The Beast” on Friday, November 30, and Saturday, December 1, at 7 pm and Sunday, December 2, at 2 pm. After the Sunday show children may have their photo taken with the characters of their choice.

BCS Serve Fabulous Brunch To Seniors

Tables were set up in the school library on Tuesday, November 27, and seniors enjoyed a fabulous brunch prepared and served by the Berlin Central School Catering Class. Kelsey O’Dell Is DAR Good Citizen

Berlin High School announces the winner of the Daughters of the American Revolution National Society Good Citizen Award.
The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a lineage society that is a non-profit organization dedicated to patriotism, historic preservation and education.
Kelsey O’Dell, daughter of Lecia and Larry O’Dell of Petersburgh, has been selected by the Berlin High School faculty and senior class as the DAR Good Citizen. Kelsey was chosen as a student who demonstrates the qualities of a good DAR citizen – Dependability, Service, Leadership and Patriotism.
Congratulations, Kelsey.

Voice of Democracy Essay Contest – Veterans Of Foreign Wars

Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ premier scholarship program. Each year, more than 50,000 high school students compete for more than $2.3 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording a broadcast script on an annual patriotic theme.  This year’s theme is “Is Our Constitution Still Relevant?” Kelsey O’Dell, daughter of Lecia and Larry O’Dell of Petersburgh, was selected as the winner of the Berlin High School Voice of Democracy Essay Contest and will advance to compete on a national level.  Congratulations, Kelsey.
