BCS Capital Plan Passes By Wide Margin

Berlin School District voters have approved a plan to renovate the school buildings at Berlin and Cherry Plain at an estimated cost of $6.8 million. The count in Tuesday’s referendum was 373 Yes versus 173 No. The vote authorizes spending $1.8 million from an existing capital reserve fund and borrowing up to $5 million, with the latter amount expected to be reimbursed from State aid.

Berlin Boys Soccer Wins Section II Sportsmanship Award

For the first time since 1989 the Berlin Boys Soccer team won the Section II Sportsmanship Award.  The award for the 2011 season was made at the Boys Section II Soccer Dinner on Sunday, December 11. The recipients are chosen not only by how the team itself conducts themselves on the field, but also by the spectators of the team.   The Mountaineers were selected out of the entire Section II community of 80 schools for this award.
“I want to congratulate all of our fans for making this possible as well as our players,” said Coach Art Schmich.

Berlin H.S. Basic Woodworking Class Donate Toys

Berlin High School’s Basic Woodworking class presented wooden toys to Jane Gazelone for the Berlin Chapter of the Capital District Beginnings program.  Students worked on their wooden toys as a community service learning project under the direction of Technology Education teacher Dawn Wetmore. Hearing On BCS Capital Plan Draws Few

A week before residents will be voting on whether to spend $6.8 million to fix up two school buildings in the Berlin Central School District, it was surprising that so few turned out on December 5 for a public hearing on the project. Only a handful showed up earlier in the evening to hear Schools Superintendent Dr. Stephen Young speak at the last of four town meetings, this one at the high school in Cherry Plain. Young scheduled the meetings to introduce himself, to talk about his views on 21st century learning and to present information about the proposed construction bond. First of all, I have to agree with Mr. Nash. We do have serious health, safety and ADA compliance issues in this district. That is where it ends. These problems are not from neglect. Many times referendums have been drawn up to correct the problems. They have always been voted down.

Letter To The Editor – Become Informed Before You Vote

To the editor:
On December 13th the Berlin Central School District is asking residents to vote on a $6.8 million dollar referendum. I am asking for the taxpayers to inform themselves before they vote.
On the surface it looks like a reasonable plan. However, if you dig deeper you will find there are many unanswered questions.

Rough Start For BCS Boys Hoops

The Berlin boys basketball team kicked off its season with games at Doane Stuart on Thursday and at home against Hoosic Valley on Friday. The quick start to the season did not go well for the Mountaineers as they dropped both contests.
Playing in the small gym at Doane Stuart, the Mountaineers had difficulty with the rebounding of the Thunder Chickens. Berlin could not find an answer to Doane Stuart’s Evan Schettini. The forward recorded a double-double, scoring 17 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

Berlin HS Senior Class Fund-Raisers

Senior Class Spaghetti Dinner
This Saturday night before the musical, come and enjoy an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner and support Berlin’s class of 2012. Dinner will be served from 4 to 7 pm in the MS/HS cafeteria and includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread, beverage and dessert. Adult dinners cost $8 and children dinners cost $5. Enjoy dinner and a show because the musical White Christmas begins at 7 pm. Eat-in or take out is available.
Pizza Night
On Friday, December 16, the senior class will be holding its second Pizza Night fund-raiser from 4 to 7 pm at the MS/HS. Hot fresh pizzas are available for $8 a pie plus $1 extra per topping, eat-in or take out. Available toppings are pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, green peppers, black olives, onions, ham, pineapple and jalapenos. Letter To The Editor – A Brief History Lesson

To the Editor:
If you have been paying attention to the discussion around the Goodermote-Willis building referendum you know I do not support this plan. The primary reason being that I was not aware of a plan until it was presented at the September BOE meeting when I was informed that I would not be able to play a role in the planning process. Given the back room development of this plan by Ms. Goodermote and Mr. Willis without any other Board members input I feel this is their plan alone and does not represent what I feel is in our District’s best interest.
