The Berlin Elementary School PTO is sponsoring a Giffy’s Chicken BBQ on Friday, May 20, from 5 to 7 pm during the Family-A-Faire/Imagination Celebration. Dinner includes a half chicken, baked potato, coleslaw, roll, cookie and a beverage. Tickets cost $10. All tickets must be purchased before the event and brought with you to receive your meal. Tickets are available at the Berlin, Petersburgh and Stephentown libraries during their regular hours or by calling Samantha Bink at 733-6729.

BCS Needs Some School Spirit

At the start of the Tuesday meeting of the Berlin Central School District School Board a delightful short film was screened. “All of our stuff is broken!” voiced a young student in it from the Berlin Elementary School. She was talking about all their playground stuff, but she could have easily been speaking in regard to the building itself. She would probably be surprised though just how broken it could possibly be. The School Spirit Committee had put the film together as part of their campaign to get new playground equipment. Letter To The Editor – Just My Perspective……
To the editor,
Last year at this time, 3 weeks away from the BCSD budget vote, BOE election and Capital Improvement referendum vote, it was hard to predict what would happen on May 18th! When polls closed I was still awake and pleased to hear that the voters in the Berlin Central School District had sent a very important message. They elected 2 new BOE members that were offering ideas that could make the BCSD a much more dynamic place to educate children. They re-elected a BOE member who had been advocating for change throughout her entire first term. The voters said “NO” to the budget that opened the door to a building plan that was incomplete and would place a financial burden on the community. BCS District Adopts Budget With No Tax Levy Increase; School Board Candidates Named

The School Board of the Berlin Central School District unanimously adopted a budget for the 2011-2012 school year at the budget workshop meeting held last Thursday night, April 14.
The final budget is now $17,374,400. This is $907,316 less than last year’s budget. There is no increase to the local tax levy. The District’s savings, known as the Fund Balance, will finance $473,800 of the budget.

Gold Medals For Local FCCLA Members
Jackson Burhans and Courtney Kellar brought home gold medals from the New York State FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) State Leadership Conference. Courtney and Jackson have been working since fall to make and deliver baby quilts to the NICU at Albany Medical Center. Sierra Maxon also received a gold medal as she presented her Chapter Showcase project, showcasing all of the 2010-2011 activities of Berlin FCCLA.

The Elmer A. Grogan Scholarship
Applications are being accepted for the Elmer A. Grogan scholarship award of $250 for the best essay on “What Freedom Means To Me” by a graduating senior from the Brunswick Central School District or the Berlin Central School District who is continuing on with his or her education. The essay should not be less than 250 words and not more than 500 words.

BCS Inventeam Holds Open House To Premiere Invention Prototype
On Tuesday, April 26, the Berlin Central School’s InvenTeam will be hosting an Open House event showcasing a prototype of their invention, announced teacher and facilitator Dawn Wetmore. The event will be held at the Berlin Middle High School cafeteria at 7 pm and is open to the public.

Underage Drinking And Drug Use Coalition Meets
The next meeting of TRACs, our local drug and alcohol prevention coalition, will be Wednesday, April 13, at 5:30 pm in the library of Berlin Middle School/High School. The group will be discussing several new and important community projects that will benefit from community input. If you are concerned about underage drinking or drug use, work with teens in the community, are parents of teens or tweens or have an interest in the well being of our community, please come to the coalition meeting. TRACs is finding ways to keep our children and teens safe; attend to learn more about how communities such as ours have turned around teen drinking and drug problems and help us put those strategies to work in our community.
Annual Ziti Dinner
Berlin Middle School Student Council will be hosting its Fourth Annual Ziti Dinner on Friday, April 15, at the Berlin Middle/High School cafeteria. A homemade ziti dinner will be served from 5 to 7pm, and the (PG) movie, “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” will be shown at 5:15 pm.

Apply For The Ethel Simmons Memorial Award
High school seniors who live in the Town of Grafton are invited to apply for the Ethel Simmons Memorial Award. This award of $300 is awarded to the graduating senior who submits the winning essay on some aspect of Grafton history. Public, private and home school students are eligible to apply. The award is sponsored jointly by the Grafton Community Library and the Grafton Historical Society in memory of Mrs. Simmons. She was a teacher in Grafton, Librarian, Sunday school teacher and 4-H leader with a great love of her community and its history.
