BCSD Contemplates Cuts To Eliminate Tax Levy Increase

The runaway train that is the Berlin Central School District budget continued its journey this Tuesday towards its unknown fate. Last week we saw its passengers, the School Board and the Interim Superintendent Dr. Brian Howard, agreeing that the way things were now they were heading towards disaster – disaster being an 8.3 percent increase in the tax levy with a contingency budget of an 8.3 percent increase in the tax levy. A rare consensus was formed; something had to be done! But what?

This Is Not The BCS Budget!

“This is not the budget that will end up being presented to the public,” said Dr. Brian Howard, the Berlin School District Interim Superintendent, to the Berlin School Board at the Budget Workshop on March 16.
Why is that important to know? Because of this number – 8.31%. This is the amount your school tax levy would be increased for the 2011-2102 school year were the budget presented at the workshop to be the same budget you would get to vote on this coming May. Pre-K Registration For BCS

The proposed 2011-2012 Berlin Central School budget includes funding for a district-wide pre-kindergarten (pre-k) program for resident children who reach the age of four on or before December 1, 2011.  Transportation for the program will be provided for all eligible pre-k students by the School District.

Berlin Elementary PTO Pancake Breakfast

The Berlin Elementary PTO is sponsoring a pancake breakfast on Sunday, March 20, from 8 to 11 am at the Berlin Elementary School.  We are serving pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage. The cost is $5 for adults, $4 for children under 12 and seniors and free for kids under 3.

TRACs Meeting March 9

The next meeting of our area’s drug and alcohol coalition, TRACs (Together Reducing Alcohol and drug use in our Communities) will be Wednesday, March 9, at 5:30 pm in the library of the Berlin Middle/High School. Community members are invited to participate in planning ways to support teens, their families and our community to stay healthy and safe by preventing teen use of drugs and alcohol. Berlin High School Drama Club To Present The Musical Grease

On March 18 and 19, at 7 pm, the Berlin High School Drama Club will present the G rated family version of the popular musical Grease. A Broadway play and movie featuring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, this ode to the 1950s immortalized poodle skirts, slick hair and danceable songs.

FCCLA Talent Show
