Ten Berlin Middle/High School Fall sports teams were honored Wednesday with certificates and awards. Athletic Director Art Schmich started the program by thanking all his coaches, bus drivers, maintenance workers and the parents for a well run season.

BCS Students Receive Invention Grant
Berlin M.S./H.S. was recently awarded a Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam grant in the amount of $4,305 to create a device for the deaf and hearing impaired that would alert them to oncoming traffic while participating in a sporting activity. BCS is one of 14 high schools nationwide to be selected as an InvenTeam this year.

Five BCS XC Runners To Go To States

The Berlin cross country teams will be continuing their success stories by sending five members to the State Championship. The teams had been very successful running in the Patroon League, but this year they moved to the WASAREN League. The WASAREN League is a combination of teams from Washington, Saratoga and Rensselaer Counties. Some of the best runners in New York state compete in this league. Berlin was confident that they had a good chance of being competitive here because of the strength of their veteran runners and the potential of their younger runners. BCSD Interim Superintendent Alerts Parents To Upcoming Emergency Drills

The Interim Superintendent of the Berlin Central School District, Dr. Brian Howard, will be issuing a letter on November 5 to parents of students in the District to inform them of the upcoming series of emergency drills in each of Berlin CSD’s schools, starting November 8 and continuing through November 12.

A Two Year, $150k Grant Will Support Area Drug And Alcohol Coalition
The Rensselaer County Underage Drinking Coalition has just received a two year, $150,000 grant to assist local drug coalitions and community organizations in their efforts to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth. The money will be used to further organize and train coalitions in Berlin Central and Hoosic Valley School Districts so that each coalition will be prepared to apply for a five year, $125,000 per year, Drug Free Communities Grant. Beat The Clock At Berlin H.S.
Wednesday evening, November 10, at 6:30 pm, department against department, faculty and staff will battle with plungers, balloons, ping pong balls and other “sports equipment” to Beat The Clock. In the style of the 1950s game show, spectators will cheer on staff members competing against the clock to perform wild and crazy tasks!
Proceeds from the evening’s antics will benefit the Class of 2011 Senior trip to Philadelphia and the Jersey Shore. Tickets cost $3 and are available at the door. Refreshments will be sold. This should be an evening of fun for the entire family.
BCS BOE Adopts Action Plan To Deal With Lead

At an emergency meeting of the Berlin School Board on Wednesday evening the Board approved an immediate action plan to deal with the problem of lead paint at Berlin Elementary School. Although there was much disagreement and uncertainty expressed about intermediate and long term solutions, the Board agreed that the plan for immediate action proposed by Interim Superintendent Brian Howard was necessary.
