Elks Drug Awareness Poster Contest Winners

Bennington Elks #567 is pleased to announce the names of two local winners in our NY State Drug Awareness Poster Contest! Hoosick Falls Central School fourth-grader Ethan Yonconish won a bicycle for his “Down With Drugs-Up With Awareness” poster! St. Mary’s Academy fifth-grader Kate Lockett won a $30 gift card for her “Drugs Are Bad! Up With Awareness-Down With Drugs!” poster.

Hoosick Falls Students Debut With The Battenkill Chorale

Students from St. Mary’s Academy and Hoosick Falls Central School will make their debut appearance with the Battenkill Chorale on Saturday, May 17, at 8 pm and Sunday, May 18, at 4 pm at the Immaculate Conception Church in Hoosick Falls. The Battenkill Chorale will conclude its nineteenth season with these performances entitled “Freedom!” a choral tribute to Nelson Mandela, plus music of Argentina. Tickets cost $15 and can be reserved by calling 518-692-7458 or emailing jen.braucher@gmail.com.

Panthers Baseball Team Roughed Up

The Panthers struggled against Hoosic Valley last Thursday as the offense could only come up with one run and the defense sprung a few leaks. Hoosic Valley, taking advantage of five Panther errors, had no problem putting runs on the board. Kealan Hitt, somewhat unfairly, suffered the loss. Hitt only gave up one earned run.

HFCS Softball Loses Three, Then Regroups

The Lady Panthers suffered through some tough games this week as the offense struggled to put enough runs over the plate.

Hoosic Valley 22        HF 7

Last Thursday the Ladies went to Hoosic Valley High and came out bruised after a mercy-rule, six inning thumping from the Indians. Hoosic Valley sent 47 batters to the plate; their first two batters had six at-bats. HF had 11 hits and scored runs in four of the six innings but were outpaced by the Indian onslaught.

Lady Panthers Lacrosse Giving It Their Best

The Ladies traveled to Troy last Friday to try to put another W in the books. It was not to be as the Jesters overpowered the Panthers. Claire Seifert and Shaelynn Kelly each scored a goal. Zaynah Poore had nine saves in goal.

HFCS PTA Book Fair

Hoosick Falls Central School will host a Scholastic Book Fair and Family Night Ice Cream Social on Thursday, May 8, from 6 to 8 pm with ice cream, activities, including caricatures by Jenny O’Connor, and summer reading club sign up in the elementary school cafeteria. The purpose of the annual event, hosted by the PTA, is to increase literacy among students and raise funds to purchase books for the elementary school library. Families, teachers and the community are invited to attend the Book Fair, for a night of fun for everyone.

The Book Fair continues Monday through Friday 9 to 11 am and 1:30 to 3 pm, from May 8 through May 16, offering specially priced books and educational products including new releases, award winning titles, children’s classics, adult books and current best-sellers from more than 100 publishers. Book Fair customers may help the school build classroom libraries and improve children’s reading skills by purchasing books through the Classroom Wish List and donating loose change to the “All for Books” programs.

Hoosick Falls Band Performances

On Thursday, May 1, at 7:30 pm, the community will be treated to a performance by our school and community bands. The program will be held on stage at the high school and is the culmination of three years of planning by Rob Allen and Bill Gaillard.

The Symphonic Band under the direction of Rob Allen will perform “The Great Locomotive Chase,” “Under An Irish Sky,” “Devil Dance” and music from “How to Train Your Dragon.”

The Community Band under the baton of Bill Gaillard will present Prestissimo by Karl King, highlights from Les Miserables, “Gettysburg” by Randy Edelman and Phantom of the Opera.

The combined bands will perform “Torrents Of Fire” by Larry Neek and John Williams and The Symphonic Marches – conducted by Rob Allen. Under the direction of Bill Gaillard the combined bands will present “Flight of Valor” by James Swearingen and “The Thunderer” by John Philip Sousa – Mrs. Sousa’s favorite march.

Please come and enjoy a music program by these two fine “senior” bands.
