Five students from the Class of 2014 at Hoosick Falls Central School (HFCS) recently attended a networking day in New York City where they met with five professionals who shared stories about their careers, offered advice on how to be successful and pledged to stay in contact with the students to help them plan their college and post-college careers.

The Hoosick Falls Central School Panthers’ football team season came to an abrupt end last Saturday when they were defeated by the Rye Neck Panthers. Hoosick Falls did everything they could, but the breaks just wouldn’t fall their way.

Hoosick Falls High School senior Katelyn Harrison recently received a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program for outstanding performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The Hoosick Falls bowling team won its first match of the 2013 – 2014 season by defeating Stillwater on November 25 by the score of 4 – 0. Total pins for Hoosick Falls were 3,677, and total pins for Stillwater were 3,012. The top bowler for Stillwater was Charlie Dyer with a 222-645. Top bowlers for Hoosick Falls were Ken Marbot, 279-701, Stephen Surdam, 264-683, Josh McCart, 233-654, A.J. Hurlburt, 220-585, Jennifer Sargood, 219-568, and Kyla Day, 177-486. The top JV score was Jonathan Bossoni with a 178-483.
“This was a good score for our first match of the season. You never know what scores you are going to get this early in the season. Ken, Stephen and Josh bowled some great scores, and our JV bowlers from last year who moved up to Varsity his year, Jennifer, Kyla and A.J., did a great job! Our total pins of 3,677 is a great total which I will take for any match during season. The team knows that we have a lot of hard work to do throughout the season to keep up these kind of scores,” said Coach Lang.

The first half wasn’t a Hoosick Falls Panthers highlight reel. It wasn’t the well oiled Panther machine we’ve come to expect. Passes were dropped, blocks were missed, runners escaped from normally sure tacklers. There were plenty of penalty flags and missed interception opportunities. The Panthers were, gasp, down 6 – 3 in the second quarter. With a season 318 – 0 edge in points in the first three quarters up to this game, this was a shock. The Hoosick Falls Panthers met the Chatham Panthers last Friday night in a Super Bowl game that both teams have looked forward to for the entire season. Each felt that the game would be close and that a break here or a break there would be the deciding factor. And that’s just how it played out. HF created their own breaks, a result of their awareness and ability to steal the ball, and made the best of them, resulting in a win.

There is nothing that surpasses the enthusiasm of the elementary students at Hoosick Falls Central School when it comes to honoring veterans. On Friday, November 8, they entered the high school auditorium dressed in red, white and blue. Members from each class carried a flag to the front of the stage. The HFCS field hockey team made the long trip out to Cicero, just north of Syracuse, to face the Cazenovia Lakers last Saturday on a brisk day. Cazenovia grabbed a 2 – 0 halftime lead and held the high powered Panther offense scoreless to take the win. The Panthers had several opportunities to score but were unable to get the ball past the opponent’s goalkeeper.

The Hoosick Falls Central School Boys Modified Soccer team ended its season proudly with a record of 8-2-2. These boys demonstrated that there is no “I” in team. They also made their coach and parents proud of their excellence in sportsmanship.

In their first daytime game of the season, the Hoosick Falls football team traveled the very familiar road to Stillwater to face the Fonda Braves. The beautiful Stillwater turf field has become the Panthers’ home away from home. The Panthers have won more football games on Stillwater’s turf than Stillwater’s own football team.
