In what is becoming a tradition at Berlin Central School District Board meetings, the Capital Project bond authorization vote was taken once again Monday night, and, in keeping with the tradition, it once again failed to pass by the two-thirds super majority needed. In this instance only Board Member John Nash voted against the bond flotation. Even with Board Members Alan Webster Jr. and Bev Stewart absent, it was all that was needed to keep a $5 million upgrade to the District’s schools from proceeding. The project as a whole is not, though, completely stalled.

HFCS Sets Tax Rates

Tax rates for the 2012-13 school year were set at the Hoosick Falls School Board meeting this month. The overall tax levy increased by 2% to $8,915,218. The tax rate on true value is $17.52 per $1,000 of value across all the towns, but the tax rates on assessed value are different for each town. Hoosick’s tax rate was up 3.79% to $66.60 per thousand. All the other towns tax rates are down. Grafton’s is down 3.57% to $213.27 per thousand; Petersburgh’s is down 3.88% to 30.78 per thousand; Pittstown’s is down 4.36% to $27.37 per thousand, and White Creek’s is down 2.79% to $28.22 per thousand.
The tax levy has increased by a total of 8% over the last five years in an era of falling State aid. In the last four years State operating aid to the Hoosick Falls District has been reduced by a total of over 16%.

Hoosick Falls Central School Opens Thursday, September 6
Tuesday, September 4, and Wednesday, September 5, are Superintendent Conference Days – no students.
Tuesday, September 4 – Open House for Grades Universal Pre-k through Grade Two (6 – 7:30 pm).
Thursday, September 6 – Open House for Grades Three through Grade Six (6 – 7:30 pm).

HFCS Golf Team In Full Swing

The Hoosick Falls Central School Golf Team has had three matches so far this week. They play again on Thursday, August 23, and the following Monday.
On Wednesday, August 22, the Team played Greenwich on their home course – the Battenkill. HF lost 1½ to 3½. Coach Pam Hatfield said, “The good news is that Andrew Hoag was the medalist. Also, Hoag and Josh Reveal both shot sectional scores, which is 8 or less over par. Congrats to these two players!”

Courtney Kellar Attends The National Leadership Meeting Of The FCCLA

Courtney Kellar, daughter of Steve and Barb Kellar of Berlin, and a junior at Berlin Central School cast New York State’s votes at the National Leadership Meeting of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) recently in Orlando, FL. Kellar is the NY State Vice President of Parliamentary Law and Voting Delegate.

Registration Day For New Students At Berlin Middle High School
There will be a Registration Day at Berlin Middle High School in the Counseling Office on Wednesday, August 22, from 8:30 am until 1:30 pm for all new students in grades 6 through 12. To register a child you will need a copy of your child’s birth certificate, health record (available at previous school), the last report card, a copy of the IEP (if your child is classified by the Committee on Special Education), proof of residency in the Berlin Central School District and a copy of the Custodial Agreement if you are divorced or separated.

Per Amore Di Un Circo ~ For the Love of A Circus At HFCS
We, the members of Hubbard Hall Inc.’s Conservatory, The 20/20 Visionaries, write our own play, our own music, create our own choreography, design and build our own sets, all on a budget of $0. All rehearsals and creativity takes place in the backyard of Hubbard Hall, right in Cambridge, and at the Hoosick Falls Central School.
A performance of “For the Love of A Circus” will be taking place in the auditorium of Hoosick Falls Central School on Sunday, August 5, at 2 pm, with no admission fee. All we ask is that you bring yourself, your friends and family and be prepared to enjoy a journey back to the Great Depression and be ready to experience the lives of those who are employed in a traveling circus.
SMA Class Of 1952 Reunion
The St. Mary’s Academy Class of 1952 is planning a 60th Reunion with a gathering at Guiseppes Restaurant on Route 7 in Hoosick on Saturday, July 28. The celebration will begin with attendance at 4 pm Mass at the Immaculate Conception Church followed by a gathering at Guiseppes at 5:30.

The Mountain Road School Is On The Move
In September, Mountain Road School will open its doors in a new home – 4565 County Route 9, New Lebanon. Known as the Hand House, this historic 1788 structure has been a landmark in West Lebanon for two centuries. Though the house was empty and was showing signs of deterioration, its “bones” are solid and true. Renovations are underway and even in the early stages, it is clear this is a perfect home for the school.
