There will be an informational meeting for the parents of Berlin students interested in going to Italy over break in February 2012. The meeting will be held at the Berlin MS/HS on June 9 at 7 pm in the library. We will be presenting the details of the trip, discussing possible fund-raising opportunities and will answer any questions or address any concerns you may have at that time. Any students interested in going on the trip should attend the meeting before signing up for the trip.

The SMA Funtastik Fair
The St. Mary’s Academy Funtastik Fair is coming on Friday June 10, from 5 to 10 pm and Saturday, June 11, from noon to 10 pm. SMA is looking for vendors to make this years’ Fair better than ever! Beauticians, arts, crafts, jewelry, toys, home party representatives – call us if you are interested! Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate food vendors/concessions at this time.

Alcohol And Drugs In The BCS District

During the tough budget talks last month, Berlin Interim Schools Superintendent Brian Howard pushed to use fund balance money to restore some of the proposed cuts. One of those was Jill Augustine’s position of Student Assistance Counselor, also known as the Substance Abuse Counselor. Howard alluded to surveys that found Berlin Central School to have, “a very significant, the most pronounced, the most severe problem with drug and alcohol abuse of the rural schools…in fact it may be even the highest of the urban schools of the county.” In the end, the School Board did restore some of the cuts, including JV sports and Augustine’s position.

Llewellyn Palmer was named Salutatorian of the Berlin High School Class of 2011.
Llewellyn is the son of Llewellyn and Sara Palmer of Berlin. During his time as a Berlin High School student, Llew has been on the Boys Varsity Cross Country, Basketball and Baseball teams and served as Co-Captain for Cross Country and Baseball this year. On Friday I attended the Imagination Celebration at Berlin Elementary School. It was a wonderful, enjoyable and rewarding time and one of my favorite experiences since becoming the Interim Superintendent of Schools. Student work was displayed throughout the school. BCS Budget Passes Easily; Accusations Of Election Violations Cloud School Board Vote

The Budget for the Berlin Central School District passed Tuesday night with election results showing 703 for and 126 against. The Budget for the 2011-2012 school year will be $17,374,000, which is $906,316 less than the 2010-2011 budget. There will be no increase in the tax levy.
