High school seniors who live in the Town of Grafton are invited to apply for the Ethel Simmons Memorial Award. This award of $300 is awarded to the graduating senior who submits the winning essay on some aspect of Grafton history. Public, private and home school students are eligible to apply. The award is sponsored jointly by the Grafton Community Library and the Grafton Historical Society in memory of Mrs. Simmons. She was a teacher in Grafton, Librarian, Sunday school teacher and 4-H leader with a great love of her community and its history.

St. Mary’s Academy Offers Lenten Friday Fish Fry Dinners
The word is out that our Fish Fry is Fabulous! We sold out last week, but we will have plenty of fish on hand this week for St. Mary’s Academy Lenten Friday Fish Fry. Only two more weeks to taste what you’ve been missing! Dinners are served at the Immaculate Conception Church Hall in Hoosick Falls from 5 to 7 pm or until sold out. Fish Fry dinners cost $9 and include hand battered fish fry on a roll, French fries, homemade coleslaw, dessert, your choice of homemade cocktail sauce or tartar sauce and a $1 coupon for a future fish fry dinner. New this year, macaroni and cheese dinners are offered for $5. There is plenty of seating for the whole family to eat in, or take-outs are available. Call the school at 686-4314 for more information.

BCSD Contemplates Cuts To Eliminate Tax Levy Increase

The runaway train that is the Berlin Central School District budget continued its journey this Tuesday towards its unknown fate. Last week we saw its passengers, the School Board and the Interim Superintendent Dr. Brian Howard, agreeing that the way things were now they were heading towards disaster – disaster being an 8.3 percent increase in the tax levy with a contingency budget of an 8.3 percent increase in the tax levy. A rare consensus was formed; something had to be done! But what?

HFCS Terminates Teacher

At its meeting on Thursday, March 17, the Hoosick Falls School Board passed a motion terminating the employment of Lawrence M. Haskell, Jr. effective March 18, 2011. The District brought charges against him alleging “misconduct, insubordination, incompetence and conduct unbecoming a teacher,” and three hearings were held before Hearing Officer John Trela in November and December of 2010. Trela rendered his decision March 7, and the Board is now acting based on his report.

St. Mary’s Academy Needs New Roof

More than 70 inches of snow has fallen in the area this winter. Seventy inches of snow that was routinely cleared off the flat roofs of St. Mary’s Academy. “Maintenance Supervisor Jerry McAuliffe organized groups of volunteers to shovel the roof,” said Principal Maureen Daurio, “sometimes Jerry was up there day and night.” The volunteers who spent hours lightening the roof load week after cold winter week included Immaculate Conception Church Pastor Tom Zelker. The roof over the gym was replaced seven years ago and is holding up well.

ADAPT Bottle Drive April 2
ADAPT, the Alcohol Drug Abuse Prevention Team planning the substance-free after-prom celebration for the HFCS Class of 2012 and their guests, is hosting a bottle and can drive on Saturday, April 2, from 10 am to 2 pm in the parking lot of the Grand Union Family Market on Route 22 in Hoosick Falls. Or, bottles and cans may be delivered directly to Nickelback Redemption Center on Carey Avenue. Please be sure to mention that you want the proceeds to benefit ADAPT for the after-prom celebration.
