Panther Girls Basketball – Exceeding Expectations

“We exceeded the expectations of many people,” said HFCS girls basketball coach Eamonn DeGraaf. “But we fell one game short of our goal of .500.” The girls team, which didn’t have a single victory last year, ended the season 9-11, 4-9 in league play. “We set a goal of one game at a time. We went a month without a win, but the girls didn’t quit. Then we had a big win over Argyle,” DeGraaf said. In the first half of the season, he said, they were 1-6 in league play. They were 4-3 the second half.

PARP At Hoosick Falls Elementary

You could have heard a pin drop in the HFCS auditorium Tuesday morning as the Laughing Couple shared an original Native folk tale with the students in grades three to six. Carolyn (Black) Hunt kept the youngsters spellbound telling her tale of black bear and grizzly bear, while Rick Hunt captivated them with the mural he created during the 35 minute story. That was followed by a question and answer time where the story was discussed and analyzed. The mural will remain on display at the school.

TRACs Meeting March 9
The next meeting of our area’s drug and alcohol coalition, TRACs (Together Reducing Alcohol and drug use in our Communities) will be Wednesday, March 9, at 5:30 pm in the library of the Berlin Middle/High School. Community members are invited to participate in planning ways to support teens, their families and our community to stay healthy and safe by preventing teen use of drugs and alcohol. Berlin High School Drama Club To Present The Musical Grease
On March 18 and 19, at 7 pm, the Berlin High School Drama Club will present the G rated family version of the popular musical Grease. A Broadway play and movie featuring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, this ode to the 1950s immortalized poodle skirts, slick hair and danceable songs.

HFCS Draft Budget Trims $1 Million And Eliminates 12 Teaching Positions

The Hoosick Falls School District presented a first draft of its budget for the 2011-12 school year at its regular monthly meeting last week. It’s a difficult year because stimulus funds are phasing out and State aid is being cut significantly at the same time.

Adapt Planning For After-Prom Celebration
ADAPT (Alcohol Drug Abuse Prevention Team), a committee responsible for planning and hosting a safe, substance-free after-prom celebration for the high school juniors and their guests, is underway with its planning sessions. The committee is looking for HFCS Class of 2012 parents/guardians to join in the planning sessions and fund raising efforts for this event.
The committee began meeting in late January and will have regular meetings every other Tuesday in the HFCS Elementary School library from 6:30 to 8 pm. The next meeting will be held on March 1.
