On May 7, one high school and one middle school team from Berlin CSD competed in the 2015 Capital Regional Envirothon competition at New York State Power Authority’s Visitor Center in Gilboa, NY. The Berlin High School team won the competition for Rensselaer County and will advance to the state competition to be held May 27 and 28 at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY.

At 7:20 am on Friday, May 8, students got off their buses, checked into their homerooms, then returned to watch the flag-raising ceremony at the School flagpole, led by Anna Brewer, Jake Restino and Stephanie Merwin, all participants in the program at the Pacific National Cemetery in Honolulu. St. Mary’s Academy Duck Race is a fun, family-friendly event is hosted by Brown’s Brewery at 50 Factory Hill Road in North Hoosick, New York.
The Second Annual “Quack” will be held on Saturday, May 30, from 3 to 7 pm. The highlight of this event is a quarter-mile rubber-ducky race down the Walloomsac River.
Ducks are on sale now for $10 each, or 3 ducks for $20. First place wins $1000, second place $250, and third place $100.
The atmosphere will include carnival games and food, live entertainment and, of course, the main attraction-the duck race!
Everyone had a such a great time last year that this event has become the newest tradition in our wonderful Hoosick community. We hope everyone will come out and enjoy it. The ducks will be launched at 5:30 pm. While playing the games and eating some great food, you can enjoy music by fab DJ Ben Patten. Last year we sold out so don’t delay. You just never know where you’re going to find the Hooosick Falls Central Schools Jazz Band. They’ve got more gigs than some of our favorite professional bands.

On Wednesday May 6, according to a police report, a teacher at the Berlin Middle School/High School noticed that an eighth grade student was holding “what appeared to be rifle,” but was not pointing it at anyone. As residents of the Berlin School District go to the polls next Tuesday to vote for or against the $19,099,991 budget for the 2015-2106 school year, they will also be asked to cast their ballot for two of three candidates running for seats on the school Board.

Vs. Cambridge – After the quick trip up Route 22, the Panthers took to the field against rival Cambridge (2 – 8, 2 – 11 overall). After getting a one run lead in the top of the first, the Panthers surrendered that lead in the bottom when Cambridge plated two runs. From there, the Panthers dominated, outscoring the Indians 9 – 0 for a 11 – 2 win. The Panthers scored in every inning but the second. Josh McCart had two singles and two RBI’s. Ryan Sanders had two singles.

Vs. Cohoes – The Panthers hosted Cohoes on the HFCS field and came out with a 12 – 11 victory. Jordyn Haynes scored five goals, Ally Burdick had three. Kara LaFlamme scored twice, and Anna Wysocki and Rachael Lewsey each scored once. Zaynah Poore had three saves. The Panthers out-drew Cohoes 14 – 9 (this is the play that begins play after a goal, winning the draw is important).

Vs. Stillwater – After traveling to Stillwater last Friday, the Lady Panthers held a 3 – 2 lead going at the top of the third inning. The Warriors scored six in the bottom of the inning and that was all they needed to take a 9 – 3 win over the Panthers. Liz Ryan and Erika Quackenbush each had two singles, with Quackenbush batting in one run. Maddy Ryan, Alyssa Ellis and Chelsea Stevens had one hit apiece. Ellis had two RBI’s. Erika Quackenbush pitched four inning to take the loss.

Three local rescue groups teamed up with Capital District artists, including several in Mr. Rob Viera’s advanced art class at Hoosick Falls High School. Six young artists from HF, along with many others, including professionals, created and donated portraits of some of the rescued dogs and cats based on the little intricacies and personalities of each one.
