BCS Board Sets Budget With .7% Tax Levy Increase

The Berlin School Board, at their monthly meeting Tuesday, adopted a 2014-2015 budget of $18,084,228 which would bring about .7% increase to the tax levy.

The entire Board voted in favor of the budget, with the exception of Board Member Jim Willis who was absent from the meeting.

The 2014-2015 budget is $222,280, or 1.24%, greater than the budget of $17,861,948 for the 2013-2014 year.

Hoosick Falls Band Performances

On Thursday, May 1, at 7:30 pm, the community will be treated to a performance by our school and community bands. The program will be held on stage at the high school and is the culmination of three years of planning by Rob Allen and Bill Gaillard.

The Symphonic Band under the direction of Rob Allen will perform “The Great Locomotive Chase,” “Under An Irish Sky,” “Devil Dance” and music from “How to Train Your Dragon.”

The Community Band under the baton of Bill Gaillard will present Prestissimo by Karl King, highlights from Les Miserables, “Gettysburg” by Randy Edelman and Phantom of the Opera.

The combined bands will perform “Torrents Of Fire” by Larry Neek and John Williams and The Symphonic Marches – conducted by Rob Allen. Under the direction of Bill Gaillard the combined bands will present “Flight of Valor” by James Swearingen and “The Thunderer” by John Philip Sousa – Mrs. Sousa’s favorite march.

Please come and enjoy a music program by these two fine “senior” bands.

Panther Baseball Wins Two

The Panther baseball team hosted the Schuylerville Black Horses Monday on a perfect spring day. Both teams came into the game undefeated, only Schuylerville left the field that way.

HFCS Softball: Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad

On a perfect day for being outside, the Panther Ladies softball team played the Schuylerville Black Horses on Monday on the HFCS diamond. Hoosick Falls put one run in the books in each of the first three innings, and that was all they needed to take a 3 – 1 victory. Both teams had five hits.

Girls Lacrosse Gets Its First Win; Boys Win Again

With outside practice hard to come by, the HFCS girls lacrosse team has struggled in the early season. After suffering through some one-sided losses, the team was looking to get its first W in the books.

Berlin HS Broadway Cabaret And Art Auction

The Berlin High School Music and Art Department will present their Broadway Cabaret and Art Auction on Thursday, May 1, at the Middle School/High School auditorium and lobby.  Proceeds will help fund next year’s joint art/music trip to New York City.

The silent auction of student artwork includes exceptional paintings and photography. The Cabaret will feature solos, duets and group performances of Broadway hits, both past and present, including Grease, Les Miserables and Wicked.

The Berlin High School Jazz Band will also perform, and the National Art Honor Society members will emcee the event.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase our students’ work as a unified art department,” said Berlin High School Choral Director Leslie Eliashuk. “The students have really collaborated to work toward a common goal, and the cross curricular activity really fosters a sense of community.”

Tickets are available at the door. Admission prices are $5 for the Cabaret only; $8 for the Cabaret with five auction tickets and $10 for Cabaret with 10 auction tickets.  The auction will begin at 6:30 pm in the main lobby. Performances start at 7 pm.  Complimentary desserts will be served.

The Margaret L. Kinn Scholarship

Applicants for this new two or four year scholarship must be a graduating senior at BCS pursuing a career in business, finance or accounting. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who will make a difference. It is not based upon the highest GPA but on who will benefit the most.

To apply for this scholarship students must fill out an application and write an essay explaining why they are interested in this chosen field and describing their outside work and extra curricular activities while a student in the Berlin Central School District and what they hope to do after graduating from college. Extra information will be attached to the applications. These can be found at the BCS Guidance Office.

Berlin Alumni Assn. Scholarship

Applications are available in the BCS Guidance office. The Alumni Association is looking for a graduating senior or a returning college student who is in need of assistance to continue his or her education. The application must be filled out, returned by the student, signed by parents and mailed to the Berlin Alumni Association, P.O. Box 149, Berlin, NY, 12022.

HFCS Budget Keeps Tax Levy Under the Cap

At its meeting on Thursday, April 10, the Hoosick Falls School Board unanimously adopted a $22,487,085 budget for the next school year that maintains existing academic programs and co-curricular opportunities for students. The community will vote on the budget proposal on Tuesday, May 20.

HFCS Softball Wins 11 – 2, Off To 2 – 0 Start

Last Thursday, in their first home game, the Lady Panthers played Cambridge on the HFCS diamond in an off and on rain. HF scored two runs in the bottom of the first on a sharp grounder off the bat of Chelsea Stevens. Cambridge came right back to score two runs of their own in the top of the second. The Panthers’ offense exploded in the third, scoring nine runs on losing Cambridge pitcher Amanda Brand. By the end of the third, the Panthers held a 11 – 2 advantage. That score held to the end of the game.
