Wetland Ecology Hike
Saturday, August 4, at 10 am. Join us for a two mile hike at Cranberry Pond. The site includes a high-quality spruce swamp, hemlock and hardwood forest, a bog-like poor fen and plants and animals rare for Rensselaer County. Local ecologist Dr. David Hunt will explain the difference between a bog and a fen and guide us through the different habitats. Wear footwear you can get very wet if you go into the fen. Community Butterfly Release In New Lebanon
The New Lebanon Library will conduct a community butterfly release on Thursday, August 9, at 1:30 pm. The release ceremony will include butterfly education, which will be conducted by Lindsay Kuhn of Smoke Ridge Organic Farm in Bloomfield, NY.
During this event, participants will learn to identify host and nectar plants, what monarch butterfly eggs, larvae and pupal forms look like, how to tell a male from a female butterfly and why males have pheromone pouches on their wings. [Read more…] about Community Butterfly Release In New Lebanon

Sunday, July 29 – Invasive Plant Species with David Hunt, 1 to 3 pm. Learn about invasive species on the Rensselaer Plateau, why they are so problematic and techniques to eradicate them. Pre-registration is encouraged; space limited This program is free.
Tuesday, July 31 – Make a Plaster Mammal Track with Josh Pulito. Learn about native mammals and how to identify their tracks, from 1 to 3 pm. This is part of the Junior Naturalist Series for kids of all ages. Pre-registration not required.

Taconic Valley Soccer Wins Capital District U-19 League Title

The 2012 Taconic Valley Boys U-19 team has accomplished something that had never been accomplished before. They have won the Capital District Youth Soccer League U-19 Boys Division with six wins and only one loss. The team is composed of players from the Berlin, New Lebanon and Brunswick school districts, and many of the athletes had waited a long time for this successful season.

2012 Hoosick Falls 10U And 12U All-Star Softball Tournaments

Bright neon yellow was the color of choice in Hoosick Falls on the weekend of June 29 to July 1 when the Town of Hoosick Youth Baseball/Softball League held its Second Annual All-Star Softball Tournament. A total of 13 teams from three different states came to Hoosick Falls and put their young talent on display.
