St. Mary’s Academy in Hoosick Falls will be holding a basketball tournament this weekend for fifth and sixth and seventh and eighth grade teams, both boys and girls. The teams consist of Hoosick Falls, Bennington, Cambridge and Hoosic Valley players. The games will be held Friday, March 16, from 4 to 7 pm, Saturday from 8 am to 7 pm and Sunday, March 18, from 10 am to 6 pm.

The NYS Maple Producers Association welcomes the public to the statewide Maple Weekends on March 17 and 18 and 24 and 25 from 10 am to 4 pm each day. Locally Kent’s Sugar House on Plank Road in Berlin will be the host in Rensselaer County.

GLSP Offers Backyard Maple Sugaring Programs – Update
To welcome spring, Grafton Lakes State Park is providing one hour backyard maple sugaring demonstrations on Saturday, March 17. The program will be offered throughout the day, at 10 am, 11 am, 1 pm and 2 pm. Please note that the second date for the maple program, previously announced for March 24, has been cancelled due to an anticipated early end to the sugaring season.

The Petersburgh Veterans Memorial Community Center was overflowing with the area’s aspiring basketball youth and their families on Tuesday night, March 6. It was the Awards Night and Pizza Party for the Taconic Valley Basketball Program. Approximately 90 young players were presented with trophies and pizza, not an easy task considering the PVMCC was packed with energetic and talkative families!

Shaker Swamp Conservancy Granted Tax Exempt Status
The Shaker Swamp Conservancy, a nonprofit community based organization in New Lebanon, has recently been granted tax-exempt status by the IRS. Now a 501c3 entity, the Conservancy can seek tax-deductible donations to continue work on research into Shaker Swamp history and ecology and its potential for recreation and tourism. The mission of the Shaker Swamp Conservancy is “to preserve the Shaker Swamp as a unique and defining asset of the Lebanon Valley, to promote understanding of this natural resource and its human heritage and to create related opportunities for public access, education and recreation.”

Panthers Fall In Heartbreaking One Point Class C Final

It was 11½ weeks ago, or 81 days to be exact, before the Class C Sectional game on Saturday, March 3, that the Hoosick Falls boys basketball team lost to Greenwich in just their second league game of the season. Losing was not something this Panther team liked though, so off they went on a 17 game winning streak, bringing them to this championship game.

Hoosac School Wins NEPSAC Class D Basketball Championship

The Hoosac School’s boys basketball team defeated the MacDuffie School of Granby, MA, last Sunday, March 4, in the New England Prep School Athletic Council Championship game by a score of 64-57.
Hoosac, seeded third in the eight team tournament, breezed by Chase Collegiate of Waterbury, CT, in the quarterfinals on Thursday, 80-53, and fought off the second seeded Bancroft School of Worcester, MA, in the semifinal on Friday, 57-47, to reach Sunday’s final against the #1 seed, and undefeated in Class D, MacDuffie School.

Cantering Cowpokes Elect Officers
The 4-H Cantering Cowpokes horse club of Stephentown has kicked off the young year in great style by electing its officers. They are Emma Woolley, President, Sarah French, Vice President, Jackson Burhans, Treasurer, and Christina Shupe, Secretary and news reporter.
Club members have been learning about the anatomy of horses and their unique markings. If any child age 9 to 14 is interested in joining, please contact Betty Gutermuth at 518-658-2192.
