Dick Ogden, his brother Walter and his son Dick have finished boiling maple sap into syrup for this year. The senior Dick Ogden said their boiling season was 31 days this year, from the beginning of March to April 4. Other producers are still boiling, he said, though he expects by mid-week this week, weather-wise, it will be the end of it for all the syrup makers.

One Woman’s Story: Hiking the Appalachian Trail
Local resident Joanna Ezinga of Canaan will present a travelogue about her solo hike of the entire Appalachian Trail on Thursday, April 7, at 7 pm at the New Lebanon Library. The presentation will be followed by discussion and Q&A.
Last March, Ezinga flew to Georgia for what she thought was going to be a month’s hike on the Appalachian Trail. Six months later she had walked to Maine.

LHWA Annual Meeting
The annual meeting of the Little Hoosic Watershed Association will be held on Tuesday, March 29, at 7 pm at the Berlin Seventh Day Baptist Church. The public is welcome. Agenda items include a review of work completed in 2010, an update on projects planned for 2011, a discussion of recent storm damage and elections for the Board of Directors. The Association is currently seeking nominations for new Directors. Current Board members are Tim Allen, Derek Burhans, Len Clapp, Stanton Goodermote, Carl Greene and Claudia Kavenagh.

Grant Awarded To The Dyken Pond Center
The Friends of the Dyken Pond Center, Ltd. has received funding for a Rensselaer Plateau Conservation Plan through a grant from the New York State DEC Hudson River Estuary Program and the NYS Environmental Protection Fund. The Friends of the Dyken Pond Center, Ltd. will work with the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance, Inc. to facilitate the conservation plan. The $60,000 will be matched by a minimum of $20,000 in donated services and volunteer time. More than a dozen volunteers will continue to work hard to make every dollar go as far as possible.
