At the Hoosick Falls School Board meeting on February 12, Board President Greg Laurin read a short statement about the resolution of the case of District Bus Driver Leo Surdam, who was suspended after an incident on his bus December 8 in which he confronted two students over the way they were behaving towards a third, younger student on the bus. Berlin’s 2015 budget, adopted on November 13, was made official and legal at the Town Board meeting last Thursday. In an action called “Nunc pro tunc” (now for then), the Board passed a “Statement of Necessity” resolution that dispenses with the normal 30-day “seasoning” of a local law. The Hoosick Falls Village Board began its meeting on February 10 with a moment of silence in remembrance of Freddie Bouplon, Joseph Cullen and Justice Richard Whalen. Whalen was a Town and Village Justice and the Village Assessor. He was on vacation at the time of his passing and had provided coverage for his positions while he was away, said Mayor David Borge. The February meeting of the New Lebanon Town Board started off by remembering New Lebanon’s Assistant Fire Chief, Mark Sheline, who passed away on December 31.
A special resolution was passed, with all Board members in favor, recognizing Sheline for his years of public service, and his “selfless dedication to the people of the Town of New Lebanon.”

On March 28, 2011, a tractor trailer truck carrying a load of propane, veered off State Route 7, crashed down an embankment, caught on fire and came to rest in Shingle Hollow Brook in the Town of Hoosick. The accident required the long term deployment of County personnel and required the diverting of traffic from Route 7 to CR-95. At the time the Rensselaer County Attorney commenced litigation against the owner and operator of the tractor trailer, Makria and Venezia Liquid Tank Line, Inc., in order to be reimbursed for the costs and damages suffered by the County. The defendants, Makria and Venezia Liquid Tank Line, Inc., have tendered a $60,000 offer to resolve this litigation.

The Hoosick Falls School District released the first draft of its 2015-2016 budget. Total spending under this budget is $23,197,818. This is $710,733 more than this year’s budget, an increase of 3.2%.

At this month’s Grafton Town Board meeting on February 9, a resolution to install LED lighting improvements in the Town Senior Center and Post Office buildings for the purpose of reducing energy costs failed to win approval from the Board. Board member Rick Ungaro asked who pays the electric bill. The bills are currently paid by the tenants, and Ungaro said he doesn’t think the Town should spend money on the lighting improvements since it will not directly or immediately save the Town any money.
