Veterans Of Stephentown Texas Hold’em

The Veterans of Stephentown will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, January 17, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located at 35 Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5:30 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp. No advance registration is required.

Starting in December 2014, the total chip count was raised to 10,000 without raising the donations. Now, a donation of $35 per player will be accepted and give the player 7,500 in chip value. Players can make an additional $10 donation at the door for 2,500 extra in chip value. This tournament will pay one place for every ten players with a minimum of four places and a maximum of nine places.

A free buffet will be served at the first break, and refreshments will be available.

Grafton Lakes State Park 30th Annual Winter Festival

The Grafton Lakes State Park and the Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park will host the 30th Annual Winter Festival and Ice Fishing Contest on Saturday, January 24. The Winter Fest will feature outdoor events along with indoor exhibits, food vendors and family-friendly and recreational activities. The event is free of charge and main events run from 10 am to 4 pm.

Sweet Sara’s Custom Desserts To Hold Cooking Class At The HAYC3 Armory

Sweet Sara’s Custom Desserts will offer a cooking class just in time for Valentine’s Day. This them based cooking class will be held on Wednesday, January 21, starting at 6 pm.

The “Sweets for Your Sweetheart” cooking class will be taught by Kelly O’Connor of Sweet Sara’s and will feature gourmet recipes in this “hands on” experience. The class will take place in The Hoosick Kitchen, a fully equipped commercially licensed kitchen located in the HAYC3 Armory at 80 Church Street in Hoosick Falls. The fee for the class is $10.

Margaret Pine

West Hoosick – Margaret “Peg” Pine, 79, passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2015, at the Center for Living & Rehabilitation at Hoosick Falls. She had resided in West Hoosick, NY, with her husband Warren Pine.

Born on April 3, 1935, in Hoosick Falls, NY, Peg was the daughter of the late John and Margaret (Maleady) Leonard. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Hoosick Falls. In her earlier years Peg worked as a telephone operator and as a clerk at the former Ben Franklin’s and Corner Closet Clothing Store, all in Hoosick Falls. She most recently worked at the Hoosick Falls Central School as a teacher’s aid, where she loved working with the kids. Peg was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church in Hoosick Falls. She loved to swim at the community pool and enjoyed going to sporting events at H.F.C.S., but most of all she cherished the time she spent with her family.

Survivors, other than her husband Warren, include their children, Carol and husband Bruce Patire and Cathy Conway, all of Eagle Bridge, NY, and Craig and wife Denise Pine of Hoosick Falls, her sister, Judith and husband Butch Eastman of Hoosick Falls, her grandchildren, Joseph and Matthew Patire, Rachel Mullen, John Conway and Chelsea and Alex Pine, her three great-grandchildren, Brody and McKenna Mullen and Maya Shaw, as well as a niece and four nephews. Peg is pre-deceased by a sister, Ann Smith, and a brother, John “Goober” Leonard.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Tuesday, January 6, at 12 noon from the Immaculate Conception Church on Main Street in Hoosick Falls. Burial followed the Mass at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hoosick Falls.

Relatives and friends called at the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street, Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090, on Monday from 4 to 7 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Karen and Molly McGovern Memorial fund, Immaculate Conception Church or the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad through the funeral home.

Jean M. Esposito

Hoosick – Jean M. Esposito, 70, passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2015, surrounded by her family at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT. She was the wife of Nicholas Esposito for 50 years. They resided  formerly on Spicer Road in the Town of Hoosick, and, for the past six years, they had resided in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Born on March 21, 1944, in Troy, NY, Jean was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Jane (Galloway) Eldred. She graduated from Hoosick Falls High School and Russell Sage College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching. Jean taught at Hoosick Falls Central School for 25 years. She was a great woman of faith. Jean was a caring wife, mother and grandmother and cherished the time spent with her family.

Survivors, other than her husband Nicholas, include their daughters, Christine Renee Pine and husband Robert and Julie Lynn Sargood and husband Christopher, all of Hoosick Falls, and Aimee Marie Decker and husband Scott of Sarasota, FL, her brothers, Kenneth, John and Jim Eldred, all of Hoosick Falls, ten grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

There will be no services per Jean’s request. Arrangements are under the care of the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street, Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Living & Rehabilitation through the funeral home.

Margaret Lehmuth

Stephentown – Margaret Lehmuth, 85, of Stephentown, NY, went to meet her maker on December 30, 2014, after a battle with leukemia.

Margaret worked for Sykes Store in Stephentown for 18 years and W.J. Cowee’s in Berlin, NY, for 20 years.

Margaret was a member of the Stephentown Baptist Church, and she loved to sew, knit, work in her garden and spend time with her family.

She was married to her long time love of 53 years, the late Harold Lehmuth.

Margaret was the daughter of Harold and Alice Eldridge Wemple, mother of Margie Mosher and her husband George, the late Karen Huff and her husband Lonnie, Walter Lehmuth and his wife Bonnie, Nancy Stollsteimer and her husband Tim, Billy Lehmuth and his wife Mary and Janet van Rijsewijk and her husband Derk. She had nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Ruthann Arto and her husband Dick, Robert Wemple and his wife Frances, Jane Thomas and her husband Bill, Frederick Wemple and his wife Lucille, Susan Demick and her husband Richard and David Wemple and his wife Ann.

A service will be held at the Jesus Is Lord Ministry (formerly the First Baptist Church of Stephentown) on January 10 at 12 pm.

Sandra MacVeigh

Petersburgh – Sandra Crandall MacVeigh, 69, died suddenly Christmas night, December 25, 2014, at her home in Stillwater, NY. Born in Petersburgh, NY, on August 6, 1945, she was the daughter of the late David O. and Evelyn Crandall. Sandy was raised and educated in Petersburgh. She lived in Houston, TX, from 1978 to 1982 and later moved back home and lived in Berlin, NY, Valley Falls, NY, and in Stillwater since 2001.

Sandy was employed as a cook at a hospital in Humble, TX, and later at the former Mary McClellan Hospital in Cambridge, NY, and the Van Rensselaer Manor in North Greenbush, NY, where she worked for 9½ years before retiring seven years ago. She was a member of the Stillwater American Legion Post #1644 where she enjoyed visiting with her friends. She loved gardening, canning and listening to old time country music.

Sandy was the wife of the late H. Richard MacVeigh, who died in 1997, beloved mother of Peter L. MacVeigh with Sherry Pelletier of Hoosick Falls, NY, Mary T. Hernandez with John Mayer of Colonie, NY, and Rotrude and husband Joseph McGreevy of Valley Falls, loving companion of six years to the late Calvin Agan, who died in 2013, sister of June Demick of Alabama and the late Oscar, Leonard, Stephen, Joseph and David Crandall and Phyllis Pollard. She is survived by six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was Tuesday, December 30, at 11 am at the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home, 66 Armsby Road, Petersburgh with Pastor Peter Seide officiating. Interment followed in the Berlin Seventh Day Baptist Cemetery. Relatives and friends were invited and called at the funeral home on Monday from 4 to 7 pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Berlin Seventh Day Baptist Church, P.O. Box 284, Berlin, NY, 12022. The condolence book may be accessed at ParkerBrosMemorial.com.
