Richard N. Hosterman

Buskirk – Richard N. Hosterman , 77, of Buskirk, NY, went home to be with the Lord on December 1, 2014, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT.

Born in Akron, OH, he was the son of the late Harry and Daphna Moran Hosterman. He was raised and educated in Akron and Randolph, OH, graduating from the Randolph High School as the Salutatorian and earning a Navy ROTC scholarship to Cornell University, from which he earned his BEE and became a NYS Licensed Professional Electrical Engineer. As such, Rich held numerous patents in engineering and eventually retired from Trans Tech Systems in Schenectady, NY, in 2010.

Rich had been a member and Past Commander of the Lake George Power Squadron, where he had taught certified courses in boating and safety. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Island Hill Cemetery Association in Buskirk.

He was a member of the West Hoosick Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir. He also was an active member of the Rensselaer Camp of The Gideons International, where he was active in Scripture distribution, and he was a Board member of the Hoosick Area Church Association.

He is survived by his wife, the former Dianne Pickering, two sons, Douglas and wife Kandy Hosterman of Clifton Park, NY, and David and wife Margaret Hosterman of California, a daughter, Diane Hosterman of Schenectady, a step-son, James P. Curran of Buffalo, NY, two brothers, William and wife Carol Hosterman of Columbus, OH, and James and wife Deborah Hosterman of Hartville, OH, a sister, Tana Fligor of Wadsworth, OH, two grandchildren, Danielle Hosterman of Clifton Park and Kristen and husband Edward Storms of Brewster, NY, three step-grandchildren, Nolan Curran of Norristown, PA, and Katie and Sullivan Curran of Saratoga, NY, and his former wife, and the mother of their children, Constance Hosterman of Schenectady. He is pre-deceased by a son, Daniel “DJ” Hosterman.

Special appreciation is extended to his dear care-givers, Susan Lillis, Tammy Hudson and Chuck Springer.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, December 5, at 12 noon from the West Hoosick Baptist Church, 1349 Buskirk – West Hoosick Road, Buskirk, with the Rev. Don Childs, Pastor, officiating.

Friends are invited to call for two hours prior to the service, beginning at 10 am. Interment will be in Island Hill Cemetery, Buskirk.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorial contributions be made to HACA, the Hoosick Area Church Association, (Emergency Fund), P.O. Box 1, Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090.

The arrangements are under the direction of the Morris – Stebbins – Miner & Sanvidge Funeral Home, 312 Hoosick Street, Troy, NY.

Charles M. Brownell

Hoosick – Charles M. (Chuck) Brownell, 84, passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2014, at the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Hoosick Falls, NY. He was born in West Hoosick, NY, the son of Ethel and Raymond Brownell. From his first marriage to Ruth Tilley, he had two daughters, Lisa Coluccio and Lorie Hassenpflug, both of Hoosick, and a son, Wayne of Florida.

James Arthur Cutler

Hoosick Falls – James Arthur Cutler, 83, passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2014, with his family at his side. James was the loving and devoted husband of Evylene (Beagle) Cutler. They resided on Rogers Avenue in Hoosick Falls, NY.

Born on November 25, 1931, in Hoosick Falls, Jim was the son of the late Arthur and Bessie (Carr) Cutler. Jim was very dedicated to his family and passionate about his community, his church and his country. His compassion is evidenced by his countless hours of volunteer service to the Hoosick Falls Fire Department, the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad, American Legion Post 40, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the First United Presbyterian Church as a sexton, the Village of Hoosick Falls as a trustee and his work as a Boy Scout Leader and at the local food closet. He was a member of the United States Army serving in the Korean War. Jim and his wife Evylene were constant companions and were often seen together serving a charity or simply walking hand in hand throughout the Village.

Survivors, other than his wife Evylene, include his four daughters, Debbie Lynch and husband Bob of Malta, NY, Linda Reveal and husband Jamie of Hoosick Falls, Carol Gorman and husband Bob of Hoosick Falls and Connie Cutler of Colonie, NY, and one son, James A. Cutler Jr. and wife Liz of Hoosick Falls. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Jim is pre-deceased by a brother, Harold Cutler.

A funeral service was held on Monday, December 1, at 11 am from the First Baptist Church in Hoosick Falls. The burial followed, with Military Honors, at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Hoosick Falls. Relatives and friends called at the Church on Monday from 10 am until the time of the service. The arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street, Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion or the Karen and Molly McGovern fund through the funeral home.

Monday, November 25, 1833: Today I went and took up two notes I owed to Hazard Morey. The first note of 45 dols we calculated the interest for one year and nine months, which was five dol and 55 cts, and the sixty dollars we calculated nine months, which was three dol and fiteen cents, which makes one hundred and thirteen dol and seventy cts.  I paid eighty dol and gave a note of thirty three dol and seventy cents.  Today I went to Thomas G. Carpenter’s and took up a note of sixty dol and interest six dol and twenty six cents, said note given to his daughter Cornelia Sweet.  I walked to Hancock to Squ John Gardner’s to see if he would change some Adams money and let me have this state money. He told me to go to Jerid Rifle and get other money and he would take the Adams money of him. I went to said Rifle and he changed fifty five dol and gave me Troy money and Daniel Gardner changed twenty dol and gave me Pittsfield.  This evening I chopped up wood, quite snowy today.

Tuesday, December 17: Today quite snowy and a heavy wind. I only tended to my chores. The snow drifted our roads and stopped the passing.

Wednesday: In the forenoon I tended to chores and chopped to the door and this afternoon I shoveled snow on the highway.

Thursday: I shoveled snow on the highway all day.

Friday: I went to Troy with my sleigh and horses. I had to get Platt Wylie to help me through the drifts to Russel’s corner, and then I went by the way of Eliah Douglass’s to get on to the north turnpike on account of the drifts. My wife went with me to Sand Lake to Mr. Withees on a visit, and I carried the widow Sefrona Booge to Troy. I called to Philip Kilmer’s and bated. I had some wine and pie and cider and paid seven cents.  From Philip Kilmer’s I drove into Troy, where I left the widow Sefrona Booge to Price’s Tavern.  I peddled off part of my load of apples. At evening I returned to said Price’s and put out my horses on my own hay.  This evening I walked down River Street and called in to Kimbles and Hills book store and paid 56 cts for a book called  The Scientific Class. I paid 12 cts for a pamphlet called The Reply to Hawes Reasons. I returned to said Price’s and went to bed.

Monday, December 23, 1833: I tended to chores and chopped wood to the door. Tonight the schoolmaster Hiram Mattison began to board with us.

Tuesday: Today some stormy. Platt Wylie took his ox team and I went with him to beat the highway road about two hours. Tonight we kept a trunk peddler by the name of Wheeler.

Wednesday (XMAS) This morning said Wheeler’s bill was 31 cts. We traded it and paid him about twelve cts more in cash. The vial of oil of soap pine was 18 cts and my wife traded out the remainder in pine.

A Total Loss; Fire Destroys Hoosick Home

A home at 27 Hampton Street in Hoosick was destroyed after fire broke out around 8:30 pm Saturday evening. The home was totally ablaze when firefighters arrived after the mutual alarm went out. It is believed the fire started in the chimney area of a fireplace. The home was located in the Clay Hill area just outside the Village of Hoosick Falls.

Stalemate On Grafton Budget

The Grafton Town Board held a budget workshop on Thursday November 20, but it didn’t last long. Councilman Rick Ungaro presented a series of changes to the budget and made a motion, seconded by Councilman Mike Crandall, to adopt these changes to the budget . The vote was 2-2, so the motion did not pass. Town Supervisor Frank Higgins then made a motion, seconded by Councilwoman Barbara Messenger, to adopt the Preliminary Budget as the Final Budget. This also resulted in a 2-2 vote, so that motion did not pass either. But apparently it didn’t need to.

New Pellet Boiler At HFCS Almost Ready

The Hoosick Falls School Board held a relatively brief meeting on Monday, November 24. Neither Superintendent Ken Facin nor the two principals were present.

Board President Greg Laurin happily announced that all five of the fall sports teams had achieved “Scholar-Athlete” status, keeping grade point averages above 90.
