Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department Texas Hold’em

The Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, October 25, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located at 35 Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5:30 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.

No advance registration is required. A donation of $35 per player will be accepted and give the player 6,000 in chip value. Players can make an additional $10 donation at the door for 2,000 extra in chip value. This tournament will pay one place for every ten players with a minimum of four places and a maximum of nine places.

A free buffet will be served at the first break, and refreshments will be available.

Pioneer Fish & Game Club Election Of Officers

The Pioneer Fish and Game Club, Inc. held its 68th Election of Officers and Picnic on Sunday, September 25. Officers elected were President Edward Sukuskas, Vice President Rodd Post, Secretary Gary Sargood and Treasurer Richard Ogden. After a brief meeting a picnic was enjoyed by approximately 60 members and guests.

The Pioneer Fish & Game Club is located a the end of Fish & Game Road on Potter Hill. The Club has a nature trail that is sometimes maintained by Boy Scouts. This summer they hosted the Town of Hoosick Day Camp for a day. They frequently host youth groups, and the Boy Scouts use the place in the winter. “The Club House has every animal from this part of the Country in it,” said President Ed Sukuskas.

The Club is currently applying for a grant to create a five and a half acre small game habitat for New England cottontails, turkeys and other small game.

The Club is limited to 100 senior members, plus several junior members.

Oktoberfest To Benefit Land Trust

The 7th Annual Oktoberfest to benefit land conservation in Rensselaer County will take place on Saturday, October 18, from 1 to 9 pm. Oktoberfest will be held at Revolution Hall, 417-425 River Street, Troy. The $10 admission will benefit the Rensselaer Land Trust. Beer and food will be sold separately and paid directly to Brown’s Brewing Company. You must be 21 years of age or older to attend.

Caroline C. Ketchum

New Lebanon – Caroline Clovis Ketchum, 87, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2014, at the Pine Haven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Philmont, NY. She was the loving wife of the late Melvin “Bud” Ketchum, who died on July 8, 2012. They were married on July 15, 1945.

Born in Stephentown, NY, Caroline was the daughter of the late Caspar and Hazel (Hassen) Rathbun. She was raised and educated in Stephentown and New Lebanon, NY, where she resided for much of her life.

Caroline served as a domestic housekeeper for 40 years to several families in Lebanon, NY, and Canaan, NY. She loved her family and her home and enjoyed gardening, yard work, sewing and her pets.

She was the much loved mother of Nancy and husband William Petersoli and the late David Melvin Ketchum and the dear aunt of Lori Stroehlin.

A private graveside service was held in the Hancock Cemetery, Hancock, MA, on Monday, October 13, at 4 pm.

Arrangements were by the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, Stephentown.

John W. Kasavicha

North Hoosick – John W. Kasavicha, 72, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2014. He had resided on Cobble Hill Road in North Hoosick, NY, with his wife Erma (Kelly) Kasavicha.

Born on November 17, 1942, John was the son of the late Francis and Wilma (Ross) Kasavicha. He graduated from the Hoosick Falls High School. John served in the United States Navy from 1984 until retiring in1991. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, baseball and teaching his grandson to drive a tractor.

Survivors, other than his wife Erma, include his son, John W. Kasavicha of Brownsville, TX, his daughter, Kristine Symonds of Hoosick Falls, NY, his brother, Frank Kasavicha of Poestenkill, NY, and his grandson, Justin William Symonds.

The funeral service was Thursday, October 16, at 11 am from the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls. Burial will be at the Gerald B.H. Solomon/Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY. Relatives and friends called at the funeral home on Thursday from 10 am until the start of the service.

The Life Of George Holcomb – George Starts Work As Assessor

Saturday, April 6, 1833: I plowed in rye and my team carried a load goods for brother Sylvester into my Rodgers house that he has hired, the south half and garden and came in possession the first day of this month and he further agrees to do me a month’s work in haying, for the rent.

Monday: This forenoon rainy and windy and this afternoon I moved brother Sylvester into my before-mentioned house and from there I walked up to Hosea Brown’s store to look at some cows of the widow Sweet’s for sale but I did not buy any. On the way home I called to J. B. Maxon’s and hired his side hill plow for a few days.

Tuesday, April 9: Today I walked up to Capt Abner Bull’s the officers of the town met. I as Assessor was sworn into office.

Wednesday: Today noon Charles Booge came on trial to live with me. He is the son of the Deceased Ebenezer F. Booge.

Saturday, April 20: I rode up to Doty’s Tavern and met the other three Assessors, their names as follows: Rufus Rose, Elbridge Green, and Levi Culver.  We met and put a price on personal property and took our bills to go round to take the value on real estate, and we agreed to meet to this same place, Mr. Doty’s, on the first Monday in June to make returns of the value of the town.  I paid 12 cts to said Doty’s for grog. I then came on to Abner Bull’s and made proposals to the widow Sefrona Booge, my terms to take her son Charles for one year. I told her if he was well I would give him the chance for school the winter season and wash and mend his clothes and pay twelve dollars, if he was obedient child and said widow agreed to take him away from my house in the course of next week if she did not agree to my proposals. From Abner Bull’s Tavern I returned to Nicholas Gardner’s where my wife was on a visit and took tea and my horse was put out. This evening I walked up to Cousin Samuel Holcomb’s the Universalists Society met to make up the last year’s arrangements for preaching by subscription. I signed five dollars and paid it down cash and I returned to Cousin Gardner’s and we stayed all night.

Sunday: This afternoon I took the single wagon and carried my wife and daughter to the Universalist meeting to the Select School house in the town, Mr. John C. Newel preached.  On this evening brother Wm came and helped me load and tie seven calves and I started for market, uncommon pleasant and warm traveling tonight.
