The NYS 5 hour pre-licensing course, needed to obtain a NYS driver’s license, will be offered on Thursday, October 2, at the Hoosick Falls Central School. Registration is that evening from 4:30 to 5 pm in the High School office. Preregistration is not needed. A valid learner’s permit and $35 correct cash or check is needed. Upcoming Events At Grafton Lakes State Park
• September 27, Saturday – Fall Foliage Hike to the Fire Tower at 10:30 am. Pack a lunch and join us for a three mile round trip hike to the Dickinson Hill Fire Tower. We’ll break for lunch and a view before returning, around 1 pm. Please call 279-1155 to pre-register. This hike is part of the region-wide Hudson River Ramble. Hikers will meet at parking lot at end of North Long Pond Road in Grafton.
• October 4, Saturday – Autumn Trails Day and lunch with the Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park, 9 am to 12 pm. Help us improve the Long Pond trail and then enjoy a complimentary lunch with Friends Board Member Chris Roe. Please RSVP at 279-1155 by Thursday, October 2, so we have enough food for our participants. Meet at Long Pond beach with lunch to follow at the Park office.
• October 10, Friday – Outdoor Tykes at 10:30 am. Bring out the toddlers and preK-k kids for some fun in the outdoors. This free program will give you ideas for how to play with your child in nature’s playground, and you’ll see how much they love to explore. Pre-register at 279-1155. Meet at Second Pond parking lot off of North Long Pond Road. Please note this is accessed via the Winter Entrance, not the main Park entrance.
• October 11, Saturday – Be Prepared! Hug-a-Tree and Great Northeast Shakeout Trainings at 1 pm. What should your child do if they’re lost in the woods? And how about if the Northeast gets an earthquake? (It’s not as farfetched as you think!) Please pre-register by calling the Park office at 279-1155. Scout troops are welcome. Meet at the Park office.
• October 15 Wednesday – Trail Advisory Meeting at 7 pm. Maintaining over 25 miles of trails takes the volunteering and enthusiasm of many people so come lend a hand at our trail advisory meeting. The new Park map will be shared. Meet at the Park office.
• October 17, Friday – Star Watch at 7:30 pm. Enjoy a free tour of the night sky with the Albany Area Astronomers. Call Bernard at 658-9144 to confirm as cloudy skies may cancel. The rain date is Saturday, October 18, at 7:30 pm. Please use the Winter Entrance and follow the signs to program.
• October 25, Saturday – Trick or Treat Nature Trail from 4 to 7 pm. Meet forest critters along a trail lit by jackolanterns. This event has become a family tradition for many locals so come join us again or for the first time. The cost is $3 per person or $10 per family. Pre-registration for a time slot is required; call 279-1155. Meet at Shaver Pond Center, 194 Shaver Pond Road, Grafton.

Rensselaer Plateau Alliance Land Use Planning Workshops
The Rensselaer Plateau Alliance will partner with Hudsonia Ltd. and the NYSDEC Hudson River Estuary Program to host two land use planning workshops, on October 1 and 18. The workshops will introduce ecological maps created for the Plateau’s 11 municipalities that can inform planning and project review in Plateau towns. Participants will work hands-on with the maps to identify important natural resources, apply conservation principles and discuss strategies for conserving forests, wildlife and water resources through townwide policy, planning and project reviews.

Brunswick Grange Tailgate Sale
On Sunday, October 5, the Brunswick Grange will hold its annual Fall Agricultural Tailgate Sale at the Schaghticoke Fairgrounds, Rts. 67 And 40, in Schaghticoke, from 8 am to 12:30 pm. More than 50 vendors will have various varieties of chickens, ducks, geese, pigeons, vegetables, plants and other agricultural items. Absolutely no dogs, cats, puppys or kittens will be allowed for sale.
A donation of $15 per vendor will becharged. The event will be held rain or shine. There will be no refreshments available. For more information, please call 279-9113.
Immaculate Conception Church Faith Formation
Lisa M. Prebble
North Hoosick – Lisa M. Prebble, 51, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, September 17, 2014, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT. She had resided on NY Rt. 67 in North Hoosick, NY.
Lisa was born on November 19, 1962, in Bennington. She graduated from Rutland School and was a florist for many years.
Survivors include her fiance, Douglas Paddock of North Hoosick, her parents, Susan and husband Paul Genest of Edgewater, FL, and Charles and wife Janice Prebble of Hoosick Falls, NY, her sisters, Tracie Bentz of Jupiter, FL, and Nicole and husband Thomas Patnode of Hudson Falls, NY, her children, Chelsea Poplin of Edgewater, FL, and Charles Poplin of Gulf Port, MS, and several aunts and uncles. Lisa will be missed by her fur babies, Charlie, Scarlet and Kiki, who were the love of her life.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the care of the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mohawk/Hudson Humane Society through the funeral home.
Gary J. Cramer
Hoosick Falls – Gary J. Cramer, 53, died on Saturday, September 20, 2014, at Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY. Gary had resided on River Road in Hoosick Falls, NY, with his wife, Lynn (Burgess) Cramer.
Born on December 23, 1960, in Cambridge, NY, Gary was the son of John F. Cramer and Roberta Breese and husband Bob. He was a graduate of Hoosick Falls Central High School. Gary served his Country in the United States Air Force.
Gary was a member of the Hoosick Falls Fire Department and a former member of the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad. He worked for the Village of Hoosick Falls for many years as a dispatcher. He also worked at Bijur Lubricating in Bennington, VT, as well as at Mack Molding in Arlington, VT. Gary enjoyed watching football and NASCAR as well as listening to music.
Survivors, other then his wife Lynn, include his two children, Daniel Cramer and Alexis Cramer, both of Hoosick Falls, his two sisters, Mariea Rousseau and husband Brian of Hoosick Falls, Lisa Johnson and husband Glen of Rhode Island, and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
The funeral service was held on Tuesday, September 23, at 6 pm from the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street, Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090. Relatives and friends called at the funeral home on Tuesday from 3 to 6 pm.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hoosick Falls Fire Department or the charity of one’s choice through the funeral home.
The Life Of George Holcomb – Buying Cows
Saturday, January 12, 1833: Today I took the double sleigh and carried Mother Holcomb up to brother Wm on a visit and from there I walked up to Mr. Allen Main’s and bought a cow, price 14 dollars. I drove the cow home and at evening I walked back to brother Wm and fetched Mother home.
Sunday: Today I went as far as brother Wm’s after the cow I bought yesterday. Said cow got out the yard and went for home.
Tuesday: Today brother Sylvester came and mended our kitchen floor. Mr. Joseph Dutcher’s son Wm came and agreed to work one day a week and does chores night and morning and go to school, and this evening I took the single wagon and carried my wife up to Brother Wm and we stayed all night. Brother had his seventh child born, it was his second son. It was past midnight, we may call it on Wednesday. This evening I walked over after Mrs. Harriet Jolls to come to brother Wms while his wife is sick.
Wednesday: I took two horse wagon and carried my wife and girls up to Squ Nathan Howard’s a visiting. I called up to Simon Cranston to see what was the reason he doesn’t carry Old Mr. Simpson and wife to the poor house. The excuse was that too cold weather. I called to Mr. Allen Main’s and paid him the remaining four dollars for the cow I bought on Saturday. I paid R.A. Brown ten cts for two pounds Spanish brown and on this evening I papered the cracks in the ceiling in the kitchen.
Saturday: I chopped wood to the door. On this evening I painted the ceiling in the kitchen with red.
Monday, January 21: Today the poor master Simon Cranston came and carried Old Mr. Joseph Simpson and his wife to the poor house in Troy.
Wednesday, January 23: Today I helped brother Wm load and draw a maple tree from his woods and I am to have part of it for a cider mill, and this evening I carried a swine to brother Wm for an increase.
Saturday, January 25: Today I rode with brother Wm to Hoosick Falls and we stayed to Mr. David Barnhart’s, Wm’s Father’s.
Sunday: Today brother Wm and I walked up to Stephen Barnhart’s and took dinner. We returned to said David Barnhart’s this evening. We went to a conference meeting at the village school house to the falls.
Monday: This morning I went from Barnhart’s and passed on through the west part of Hoosic into the edge of Pittstown looking for cows. I could not find any. I returned and went up into Grafton and stayed to the widow Scriven.
Tuesday, Jan. 29: This morning I paid my bill to the widow Scrivens which was 31 cts. I then called to Mr. Hewitt’s and took breakfast and I bought a cow to said Hewitt’s and paid 15 dollars. He gave me a rope and I led the cow home. I called in Berlin to Hammon Village to Mr. Streeter’s tavern and I paid six cts for brandy and crackers. I got home about eight this evening.
