Chartered Bus Trip To See The HFCS Jazz Band At The NYS Fair

Join the Hoosick Falls Central School Jazz Band on a trip to the NYS Fair on August 27. For $40 per person, you will receive a round trip chartered bus seat, driver gratuity and a pass into the Fair.

There are many free concerts and entertainment to see while at the Fair. The Jazz Band will be playing at 2 pm in the Empire Theater, located inside the Art & Home Center, as well as playing in the hometown parade, which starts at 6 pm.

If you sign up to be a jazz band “groupie” you will save on gas, tolls, parking fees and just be a part of the group!

The bus will leave HFCS at 7:45 am and will arrive back by 11 pm. Call Joyce Brewer at 258-5772 or email tjbrewer4942@gmail.com to reserve your seat by August 13.

Berlin Middle/High School Registration Day

There will be a registration day at the Berlin Middle/High School on Wednesday, August 20, from 8:30 am until 1:30 pm for all new students in grades six through twelve. To register a child you will need a copy of your child’s birth certificate, proof of residency and their latest report card. If you are divorced or separated, a copy of the Custodial Agreement is required.

Please be aware there are summer assignments that students will need to have completed for their first day of school. These assignments can be found on our webpage. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the Counseling Office at 658-2515, ext. 1070.

Donald W. St. Hilaire

Hoosick Falls – Donald W. St. Hilaire, 84, a lifelong resident of Hoosick Falls, NY, passed away on Sunday, July 27, 2014, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT. He was the husband of the late G. Albertine (Lunos) St. Hilaire, who died in 2002. Donald resided on Main Street in Hoosick Falls.

Born on July 16, 1930, in Hoosick Falls, Donald was the son of the late Joseph and Yvonne (Dumouchel) St. Hilaire. He was a very proud graduate of St. Mary’s Academy and was a veteran of the United States Army serving from 1951-1957; he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals.

Donald was the District Manager for the Grand Union Company for forty-seven years until retiring. He was a member and Past Commander of the American Legion Post # 40, a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church, a founding member of the Lions Club and a past member of the former Elks Lodge, all in Hoosick Falls.

Survivors include his children, Tammy Lankford of Florence, SC, Donald W. St. Hilaire Jr. and wife Pearl, of Long Beach, CA, Austin and wife Heather St. Hilaire of Hoosick Falls and David and wife Julie St. Hilaire of East Greenbush, NY, his brother, Raymond and wife Dale St. Hilaire of Hoosick Falls, his grandchildren, Benjamin, Amanda, Tiffany, Renee, Jonathan, Danielle, Shania and Gabriella, three great-grandchildren, Josiah, Bebe and Avianna, and many nieces, nephews and friends. He is pre-deceased by five sisters, Alice Lozo, Veleda Graney, Leona Turner, Velma (Sister Yvonne) St. Hilaire and Lucille (Sister Adelina) St. Hilaire, and two brothers, Harvey and William St. Hilaire.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Wednesday, July 30, at 10 am from the Immaculate Conception Church on Main Street in Hoosick Falls. Burial was at the Saratoga National/Gerald B.H. Solomon Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY.

Relatives and friends called at the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street, Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090, on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph Carondelet or St. Mary’s Academy through the funeral home.

Angeles T. Hall

Angeles T. Hall, 88, passed away on July 14, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy. Born in Cabagan, Isabella in the Philippines, she was the youngest of ten children born to the late Fausta & Jose Taggueg. A World War II survivor of the Japanese Invasion, she graduated from the University of Santa Tomas in Manila with a degree in nursing.

Collaging Workshop At The New Lebanon Library

Ruth J. Abram, Columbia County artist, will conduct  a collaging workshop at the New Lebanon Library on Wednesday, August 6, at 4:30 pm. This event, which is open to anyone aged 3 to 100, is free and open to the public. Advanced registration is recommended by calling the Library at 518-794-8844 or emailing leb@taconic.net.

Abram has been doing collage in fabric and in paper since the l970s. In the last few years her work has been the subject of two exhibits – in Manhattan and, more recently, in East Greenbush. The workshop is suitable for anyone who can cut paper and use paste. Everyone will leave with a collage, as they define that term, and a happy feeling that creating art brings on.

Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department Texas Hold’em

The Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, August 9, in the Stephentown Fire Hall, located at 35 Grange Hall Road in Stephentown. The doors will open at 5:30 pm and close at 6 pm. Play begins at 6:15 sharp.

No advance registration is required. A donation of $35 per player will be accepted and give the player 6,000 in chip value. Players can make an additional $10 donation at the door for 2,000 extra in chip value. This tournament will pay one place for every ten players with a minimum of four places and a maximum of nine places.

A free buffet will be served at the first break, and refreshments will be available.

The Life Of George Holcomb – Suing Rowland Danford

Wednesday May 16, 1832: We planted corn and furrowed. Today old Joseph Simpson moved into my house and is to have it till April next, and agrees to give a month’s work in haying. If he failed in doing a good day’s work as any man that works for me, he agrees to make up the difficiency and this evening I walked to one of the poor masters, Jonathan Carpenter and reported him and wife, and I call to Squ Nathan Howard’s and took a summons against Rowland Danford in case of trespassing for filling up the spring of water near my tenant house in the highway.

Thursday: This forenoon I carried Mr. Amos Chapman ten bushels of potatoes at 25 cts and I credit him the same for shoemaking, and said Chapman took part of my clock and carried it to Hancock to Delanoe’s and had a wire put in. I paid six cts for Delanoe’s doing it.

Wednesday, May 23: This afternoon Mr. Amos Chapman draws wood with my team from my lot, which pays him for cleaning my clock the other day.

Thursday: I took my single wagon wheels to brother Wm and had the old tire taken off and my horses shoes part new set.  I carried Squ Nathan Howard one bushel pink eye potatoes for his giving me a fowl, a cock that the breed is lately imported, and to have Samuel Holcomb answer my name in a suit against R. Danford as is before mentioned. A snow storm. Today I paid two dol to S. Holcomb for priest tax.

Friday I took my single wagon wheels and carried to Wm Gay to be new rimmed, price agreed three dollars, and I fetched home his empty barrel to fill him a barrel cider towards the work.

Saturday: I carried my wife to Hancock and got her bonnet that was whitened and lined to a milliners, I paid one dol and 32 cts cash. We sold five pounds ten ounces butter at 14 cts per pound for cash to Geo Babcock.  We returned by way of Mr. Sweet’s to see if his wife had money to lend.  She said that she had and I must call to her father, Thomas G. Carpenters for the money. Today Samuel Holcomb answers to my suit against R. Danford.

Tuesday: This afternoon I went to Thomas G. Carpenter’s and borrowed sixty dollars of his daughter Cornelia Sweet, payable in one year on interest. I paid brother Wm up for a cow I bought this spring 22 dols. I called to Squ Nathan Howard’s to know how my suit was managed against Danford.
