As a result of a Stewart’s Christmas/Matching Fund grant, San Damiano Family Support Services in Petersburgh wants to help one child a month for the next 12 months whose parent is a wounded veteran. County Legislators Seek Safety Review Of State Route 7

At its regular meeting on Tuesday, July 12, the Rensselaer County Legislature passed a resolution asking the NYS Department of Transportation (DOT) to review the safety conditions on a section of State Route 7 between the Bennington Battlefield Motel (4328 Rt. 7) and the intersection of Routes 7 and 22 in the Town of Hoosick. Over the years this stretch of road, with its sweeping high speed curves, necessitated because the road runs along a winding trout stream, has been the scene of numerous accidents. Grafton Town Board Action – Amnesty Program Extended

The Grafton Town Board extended the deadline for its amnesty program because they felt that it is working well and it needs more time to accomplish more. Supervisor Tyler Sawyer said there is a lot of follow-up still to be done. Buildings that are retroactively permitted still must be inspected for safety and building code compliance, and assessments have to be updated. The Board all seemed to be in agreement that the amnesty program is going well and it should be continued for a while longer, and they unanimously approved an extension until September 15.

Lightning Strike Disables Wells In Hoosick Falls

The powerful storm that swept through the Capital District last Wednesday, July 6, managed to inflict some heavy damage on Hoosick Falls. Unbeknownst to most residents, one of the Village wells took a direct hit from a lightning strike about 3:30 in the afternoon. The strike was so powerful it also knocked out the other two wells. New Lebanon To Litigate Landfill Closing

The night was sultry. A bored looking well tanned Sheriff’s Deputy sat in the corner. Now and then a lanky young man with a crooked smile wearing a muscle T-shirt and handcuffs was herded in and out of the room to a Judge’s chambers in the back by a red-faced State Trooper. Was there going to be trouble? “No, no; no trouble,” said the Deputy. This distraction at Monday’s New Lebanon Town Board meeting was caused by the simple fact that New Lebanon, without a Town Hall of its own, shares its meeting room in the American Legion building with the Town Court.

The Berlin Central School District held a Meet the Candidates night on June 28 allowing residents to meet and interview the final two candidates for the District’s Superintendent position.
The finalists in the search are Virginia Keegan of the Owen D. Young Central School District in Herkimer County and Stephen M. Young of Lindenhurst Public Schools in Suffolk County.

Berlin July 4th Parade Is A Big Hit

The Berlin Fourth of July Parade, being the only one in the County, normally attracts a good-sized crowd. This year was no exception, in fact the number of spectators appeared to be a good bit greater than usual. Jane Fitzgerald has done yeoman service chairing the Parade Committee for many years. This year the Parade Committee was pleased and proud to recognize her “many jobs well done” and appoint “Aunt Jane” as Grand Marshal of the Parade.
