Moving The Barn

Friday, June 15, 1855: This morning I took my horse and wagon and carried the Shaker and one of his jacks home, and John F. paid him for his day’s work two dollars. On the way home I called to the widow Broad’s to see if I could get Mr. Holdridge to help move the barn, I tried to get Jonathan Gillet and Judah Rowley but could not. Ezekiel Goodrich and Sylvenas Carpenter came before noon and stayed till night, and John Cohklin came in the afternoon, our own help, the same as yesterday that is Geo P. and Edward Manning and a new hand Irishman, name I did not learn, and our hired men Patrick, Edward and Michael, and John F. quit toward night, he was unwell. We moved the barn today, the width of it. This morning John F. rode up Goodrich Hollow after help.

Propane Fire Causes Evacuation In Hoosick

Route 7, from Babcock Lake Road to Route 22, was closed Monday, March 28, as a result of an accident involving a tractor trailer containing 9,500 pounds of combustible liquid propane. About 12:30 pm Monday John N. Makria of West Islip, NY, a contract driver for Venezia Liquid Tank Lines Inc. out of Pottstown, PA, lost control of his truck, and it crashed through guardrails, knocked down power poles, rolled down an embankment into Tibbitts State Forest and caught fire. The accident occurred just west of the Man of Kent Tavern & Café. Makria was found outside the truck, minus shoes. He was treated by the Hoosick Rescue Squad and brought by ambulance to the Squad House in Hoosick Falls, then airlifted to Albany Medical Center. He is still in the hospital with head injuries and is currently under observation. No one else was injured in the accident.

HF Police Arrest Two Men; Face Kidnapping And Sexual Assault Charges

Twenty year old Dong Van Huynh and 21 year old Jorge Andino, both of Worcester, MA, are being held in the Rensselaer County Jail. They face charges in New York and Vermont and possible Federal charges resulting in their involvement with a 13 year old Hoosick Falls girl Van Huynh met through Myspace®.

Hannaford’s Hits DOT Roadblock; May Pull Out Of New Lebanon

This past week has been a troubling one for the concerned people of New Lebanon who have been struggling diligently these last fifteen months to lead their town out of the desert. Desert, in this case, not meaning a place of sand and camels, but “food desert,” a term somebody somewhere coined to aptly describe an all too common phenomenon these days in the United States – towns with little or no access to fresh healthy food such as fruit and vegetables. New Lebanon found itself listed among the great American food deserts of Detroit, Memphis and Newark when the New Lebanon Supermarket closed in December of 2009.

Questions Still About The End Of The Berlin- Taborton Fire District Contract

The Board of Fire Commissioners of the Taborton Fire District has taken issue with comments made by Berlin Fire District representatives reported in The Eastwick Press on February 4 regarding the end of a long time contract between the Berlin and Taborton fire districts. According to Fredric DeMay, Chairman of the Taborton Board, there were several issues that they disagree with.
