Tuesday May 23, 1854: Today I tended to chores. I am quite lame. This evening after I had got to bed, an Irishman, a stranger, came by the name of Linsley and his son a boy 17 years of age by the name of Thomas, he made a conditional bargain with John F. for his son Thomas to work for us for 5 months at 9½ dollars per month and do chores on Sunday and husk corn evenings, and is to work the term of time mentioned providing both parties is suited.

Hats off to the Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition (HAYC3) and all the many volunteers who made the Pumpkinpalooza weekend such a big success. Ideal weather certainly helped. Both Wood Park and the Athletic Field were filled with folks participating or watching and enjoying activities.

Got Cheese?

The Gouda cheese is aging quietly in the “cave” and will soon be ready for sale. Gouda is the latest variety added to the line of cheeses produced at Berlin’s Mapledale Farm. It shares company in the aging room, called the “cave” by the Mapledale folks, with the Farmhouse Cheddar, the Classic Colby, the Pepperpatch Colby and the Garlic Colby. Carl Greene, one of the owners of Mapledale Farm, said the Gouda is creamier and moister than the cheddar. Given the Dutch background of this area, the Greenes thought it appropriate to try out a Dutch cheese.

Grafton Rallies For Rosie’s After Break-Ins

Jane Rose Kane and her husband Patrick have lived in Grafton for 20 years. This past March Jane fulfilled a long held dream to open a restaurant. She leased the former Lena’s on Route 2 in Grafton and renamed it Rosie’s Cafe. “We did great when we first opened,” she said cheerfully. She has a faithful core of regulars, particularly seniors. “When they don’t come in I get worried,” she added.

No Challenge Too Big Or Too Small

Marian Foster, 85, of Johnsonville made a commitment that she wanted to do something for others as a way to say thank you. She didn’t elaborate on why or for what. She has volunteered in the medical field for years so she wanted to do something in that related field. Tour Of The Stephentown Center Baptist Church Cemetery

The Rensselaer Land Trust sponsored a tour of the old Stephentown Center Baptist Church Cemetery on Sunday, September 26. About twenty participants explored the burial ground on Calvin Cole Road, which contains the grave of a Revolutionary War Soldier and beautifully restored stones from the early 1800s.

Hoosick Falls Field Hockey Undefeated After Nine Games

On Monday, September 20, HFCS Field Hockey played Warrensburg at home. HF sailed to a 5-0 victory to bring their season record to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in League play. Goals by senior Samantha Skott, with an assist from Freshman Carsen Williams, by junior Hailey Bugbee, with an assist from senior Karley Morin, and by senior Alyssa Schneider made it 3-0 at half time.
