All-Star Photo Exhibit At Darrow School
The beauty of the Mount Lebanon landscape and the historic Shaker buildings that grace it have long provided inspiration for photographers. In June and July, Darrow School will be the site of the exclusive exhibit “Visions of Mount Lebanon,” a fund-raiser honoring the Shaker Museum and Library’s sixtieth anniversary. The exhibit, located in the School’s extraordinary Joline Arts Center, is open to the public daily between June 27 and July 3, from 12 to 5 pm. Admission is free.

Marketing Potatoes To New York City
Tuesday, August 9, 1853: I and Patrick dug potatoes, Louisa Merrils came a spell this morning and picked up potatoes but would not mind and pick up the small ones and I dismissed her. Today Geo P. took John F. horse and carried John F. to Canaan Depot to take the cars for New York to see what the market was for new potatoes and Geo P. returned from Canaan to New Lebanon Shakers and bargained with the North Family to buy their nursery grafted fruit at ten dollars per hundred and they help him take said trees up next April.

Four Die In Route 7 Crash

A recent press release from NYS Police officer Maureen Tuffy stated “While police may never know why Mr. Martinez crossed over into the westbound lane of traffic, leading to the head-on collision with a tractor-trailer, driver fatigue may have been a factor.” The fatal accident occurred around 5 am Sunday morning on Route 7 in Pittstown. Bentleys Cavern Preserve Opens

About twenty-five people gathered in the rain Sunday, June 6, for the official opening of Bentleys Cavern Preserve in Berlin. The land was donated to the Conservancy last year by Robert Bentley and the late Eleanor Bentley through their daughter Randi Bentley. The opening was attended by Robert and Randi Bentley, a number of officers and members of the Conservancy and a few local people including Berlin Town Supervisor Rob Jaeger.

Stephentown Motocross Tabled Again

Howard Commander’s Motocross course has been put on hold for another month. The world class MX track that Commander proposes to put in a corn field in the southwestern corner of Stephentown was tabled again by the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) at their meeting on June 3 after hearing additional protests from neighbors and a demand from an attorney for a lot more information.

Petersburgh’s Water District Law Under Discussion

On June 7 a public hearing at the Petersburgh Town Hall about the revisions to Local Law 2 of 1986 regarding the water district was held. Town Board Members Amy Manchester and Richard Snyder along with Town Supervisor Peter Schaaphok and Town Clerk Callie Crisp were in attendance.

Hoosick Falls Landlords Steamed Over Water

The Hoosick Falls Village Board meeting opened Tuesday night, June 8, with a Public Hearing on metered water. Mayor Matt Monahan said there are 1,208 services on the Village’s water system. The Village has not received meter installation reports from 172 of those services. The information should have been turned in to the Village by the meter installer. BCS Budget Hearing On Amended Budget

As indicated by Tuesday’s budget hearing, not everyone is on board with the amended budget. In May the budget, which called for a 1.74% tax levy increase, was voted down. On May 28, an amended budget was adopted by the BOE, and it will go before the voters on June 15. The amended budget stands at $18,281,716, which is the exact level as the 2009-2010 budget. So if it passes, there will be no tax levy increase. Furthermore, while the elementary schools will be consolidated, no modular classrooms will be added at Berlin Elementary, cutting roughly $400k from the first budget. To create additional classroom space at Berlin, the District’s business and administrative offices will be sent to the Jr./Sr. High School in Cherry Plain.
