Geo P.’s Nursery Business Takes Off
Wednesday, April 16, 1851: High winds and some rain. I am unwell and lame. Today John F. and A. Celinbalm took the banking from the house and this afternoon John F. walked over to Doctor Dickerson and got part of his school money.
Thursday: Today Geo P. went with the two horse wagon, he went with my horse and Hiram Newton’s horse and went to Berlin and Petersburgh and Hoosic and carried 660 trees of grafted to sell. This afternoon made steps to the south door.
Friday: This forenoon I laid up wall and rail fence on Wm B. Maxon’s farm and John F. plowed sward on said farm and in the afternoon John F. planted potatoes on said farm.
Saturday: This foenoon John F. planted potatoes on Wm B. Maxon’s farm. I this afternoon went to Philander Hatches raising a barn. This evening Geo P. returned home from selling out a load of grafted trees of 660 of three days up as far as Hoosic and sold one hundred and thirty dollars and got pay down 80 dollars for eleven bushels of early June potatoes in Hoosic.
Monday: I walked to Lebanon and paid 15 cts for three letters to N. Nichols post office, one for Geo P. and my two daughters each a letter and two cts for a vial ink. Tonight Mr. Ford from Windsor stayed with us with a two horse team, he came to carry a load of apple trees for Geo P.
Tuesday: I this forenoon mended fence on my Rodgers farm, and John F., and J. Bassett and A. Celinbaum worked on said farm. Today Geo P. went with my one horse wagon and horse and Daniel Collins and Mr. Ford they all went and carried loads of apple trees to Windsor.
Wednesday: John F. and his two sisters rode to Lebanon Store, they carried ten dozen eggs to Gay’s store and John F. sold a fore quarter veal for cash, four cts per. I sent and got five sts vitrial and six cents for salt peter. Today J. Bassett set out seed turnips and tagged my twenty sheep and he put vitrial vinegar spirits turpentine and saltpeter on my sheep feet.
Thursday: Today Colonel Richard Spencer came with Colonel Knowlson son and took dinner with us and then John F. and John Bassett went with them to Geo P. nursery and young Knowlson paid 18 cts apiece for 80 apple trees.
Friday: This forenoon John F. rode to Hancock and carried three quarters veal, one quarter to Bartlett, 15 pounds at five cts per, and one to Gustus Landon, 15 pounds at five cts per, and one fore quarter to Grind, 18 pounds at four cts per, and charge them on account.
