Hoosick Falls Health Center Has Two Gwendolyn J. Wright Memorial Scholarship Awardees

Martha Bonneau and Sue Burdick are the recipients of the Gwendolyn J. Wright Memorial Scholarship, endowed for a Certified Nurse Aide who has decided to become a fully qualified nurse or an LPN training to be a RN and meets the requirements set forth by the Scholarship Committee.

 

 

Martha has been employed at the Hoosick Falls Health Center since February 2007, and Sue has been employed by the Center since October 1998. Both are valuable members of the Center and are part of a team of outstanding employees who contribute to the quality care rendered to the residents.

Gwendolyn “Gwen” Wright was a member of the Hoosick Falls Health Center Auxiliary. She was very active in the organization and held the office of vice-president for several years. Daniel Wright, son of Gwen Wright, presented the $1,000 to each awardee.

Hoosick Grange News

On Wednesday, September 10, Hoosick Grange met at the Grange Hall with Master David Cornell. The fair committee presented the blue ribbon and the fair check to the Master. The Master thanked the fair committee for their work. The fair committee thanked all those who provided the wood and the stove and pipe and all those signs so beautifully done. They also thanked the helpers who helped to set the booth up.

The Lecturer discussed the planning meeting for the year. It was decided to have the meeting on our next regular meeting, September 24. It was also decided that we would do shoe boxes again this year and would give them to the Hoosick Falls Food Closet to be given to the children who needed them, at Christmas. 

Elsie Marpe was in charge of the program for the evening. She told us about harvest  time and elderberries. The elderberries are very high in vitamin C and second only to black currants. Dyes can be made from the berries and the blossoms. Some people make wine and pies from the berries. Young elderberries can be scalded in boiling water and eaten in salads. Elsie told us many other uses of the berries. 

Elsie told us two jokes – one about the Mother Superior of an Irish Convent and one about Katie O’Neal, who dreamed of being a dancer. She was especially good at acrobatic dancing and became well known for her dancing in America. She became lonesome for Ireland so she returned for a visit. She went straight to the church and into the confessional. After that, the old priest gave her a light penance and said, “Aren’t you Katie O’Neal?” She said, “Yes.” So he asked her what she had been doing. She told him she lived in America and she was an acrobatic dancer and danced on stage. He thought that was wonderful, but he didn’t know what an acrobatic dancer does. She said, “Let me show you, Father,” and with that she leapt out of the confessional, skipped down the aisle, did 3 somersaults, 3 twirls, 3 handsprings and finished with a split landing on the floor in front of two astonished village matrons. “My gracious,” one woman said, “look at the penance Father is handing out today,” and the other said, “And me forgetting to put on my bloomers.” After that joke and when everyone stopped laughing, Elsie proceeded to tell us about Betty Crocker and Duncan Hines and finished with another joke. 

The Lecturer thanked Elsie and told about the next meeting being on September 24. It will be a planning meeting. Helen Filkins will be in charge of refreshments. Refreshments for the evening were provided by Edna and Allen Cornell.

St. Mary’s Academy Annual Cow Plop And Car Show

It’s that time of the year again! Rain or shine, St. Mary’s Academy of Hoosick Falls will be hosting their annual Cow Plop and Car Show on Sunday, October 5 at the Town of Hoosick Athletic Field. 

The car show will begin at 10 am. Registration for the car show will take place that day, entrance fee is $10.00. There will 35 trophies given away this year to the top favorite cars, trucks and motorcycles. The car show is sponsored in part by DePaula Chevrolet and Hummer of Albany, WCW, Inc., and Tinkham Real Estate.

In addition to the car show, it’s the famous cow plop. Deeds to squares are $20 and are on sale now. If the cow “plops” in your square, you win $1000! They sold out before noon last year, so buy early. Throughout the day, the crowd will be entertained by music provided by friend of St. Mary’s, Joe Shaw.

There will also be a family fun festival from noon until 3 pm, including a children’s games and activities area, The Hoedown Express train ride, sponsored by Interface Solutions, food, bake sale, raffles, rides provided by Amyland Amusements, entertainment and more. Vendors are welcome.

Stephentown Memorial Library Pinwheels For Peace

The Stephentown Memorial Library will host the Pinwheels for Peace art project in conjunction with Stephentown Girl Scout troops on September 21, the International Day of Peace. 

Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started in 2005 by two art teachers, Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, who teach at Monarch High School in Coconut Creek, Florida, as a way for students to express their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives.  The non-political project was quickly embraced by their students and the entire school community and by millions of art teachers, teachers, parents, children and adults who desire peace in our world. The first Pinwheels for Peace were installed on September 21, 2005. Since then, we have grown from 500,000 pinwheels planted the first year, to 1.2 million pinwheels in 2007!

Come to the library this week and make a pinwheel; it only takes a few minutes! All pinwheels will be planted in front of the library on Saturday, September 20, in time to commemorate September 21, 2008, the International Day of Peace. For more information, call 518-733-5750.

Stephentown Historical Society’s History Challenge To Explore Town’s Cemeteries

The Stephentown Historical Society’s Second Annual History Challenge will be on Saturday, October 25, from 2 to 5 pm.  

In keeping with the Stephentown Historical Society’s current efforts to update its records of the Town’s more than 70 cemeteries, the theme chosen for this year’s History Challenge is “Tombstone Tales.”  Tammy Madden, Chair of the History Challenge Committee, explained that the History Challenge is something akin to a scavenger hunt. Teams of participants will be directed to search through four or five cemeteries in town to discover answers to questions about those cemeteries and some of our predecessors buried there. Prizes will be awarded in several categories and to the team with the greatest number of correct answers.

The History Challenge entry fee is only $10 per person.

At the conclusion of the History Challenge, participants are invited to enjoy a turkey dinner at the Stephentown Heritage Center on Garfield Road, Stephentown, where History Challenge winners will be announced and prizes awarded.  The cost of the dinner is included in the $10 per person entry fee. Participants attending dinner are asked to bring an appetizer or dessert to share.  

Registration Deadline Is October 17

Participants must register for the History Challenge by October 17. The event will be limited to 45 participants, due to space limitations at the Heritage Center. Registration forms are available at the Heritage Center on Fridays from 1 to 4 pm and at the following locations the Stephentown Library, Madden’s Garage and Sykes’ Store.  

Sponsors’ flyers or business cards will be Included in all participants’ packets. “We were fortunate that Town businesses supported our History Challenge by purchasing sponsorships last year,” Madden noted, “and we’re hoping they will be equally supportive this year. Sponsorships are only $20, and we’ll put the sponsor’s flyer or business card in each packet distributed to Road Challenge participants. We will also welcome contributions of coupons or prizes from businesses and individuals,” she concluded, “and will encourage participants to patronize the sponsor’s businesses.”

Berlin Rabies Clinic

A Rabies Clinic will be held on Thursday, October 16, at the Berlin Highway Garage on Route 22 in Berlin. All rabies vaccines, dog-DHLPP vaccines and cat-FURCP vaccines cost $10 each; cash only! PVMCC News

Mark your calendars and set time aside to come and enjoy Music & Art CafÄ next Thursday, September 25.  Guest musicians will be Carolyn Odell Durnin and her daughter, Molly Durnin.  This mother and daughter duo dazzled audiences this past spring during a night featuring open mic performances at PVMCC.  Sweet voices combined with original music will make for a wonderful event.  Come listen, come to draw, come to enjoy great desserts!  Performance begins at 7 pm. Admission is $5 per person, $8 per couple or $12 per family.

Petersburgh Rod & Gun Club Turkey Shoots

The Petersburgh Rod and Gun Club will be holding its annual Turkey Shoots on September 28 and October 5 with a rain date of October 12.  The fun starts at 12 noon.  Spend an afternoon with the whole family – great food, soft drinks and fun competition. Win A Turkey! Shotguns and .22 rifles only (no 20 gauge shotguns).  The Turkey Shoots will take place at  Scriven Road – Petersburgh.  The last shot is free for 14 year olds and under. Also the Petersburgh Rod and Gun Club will be offering a hunter’s safety course in October.  So if you are interested, you may sign up at the Shoot.

Art And Photo Exhibits At The Petersburgh Library

Amy V. Shawver, who has recently relocated to Petersburgh, has installed an exhibit in the Library display case. Amy has spent most of her life in various locations overseas. She and her husband Dr. David J. Shawver have worked in international school settings in Asia and Africa. David is currently the director of the American International School Tanzania in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. The Shawvers have lived in five international school settings, including in Myanmar for seven years and in China for nine.  The Shawvers have traveled extensively in the regions of the various school assignments and the artifacts on display at the Library represent the cultures and memories of their lives overseas.

Beginning in October, Amy V. Shawver’s photographs will be on display at the Library. Some are hand painted and some are black and white and all are developed by the photographer. They include scenes both from living in the U.S. and abroad.  

For the remainder of September the art work of Mr. Willy Siller of Berlin, will continue to be on display at the Library. Siller has been a resident of Berlin since April, 1958, and he took up art full time after his retirement in 1986. This is his second exhibit at the Petersburgh Library.

Berlin Cub Scout Pack Wants YOU

Calling all first through fifth grade boys in the Berlin School District.  The Berlin Cub Scout Pack 911 is looking for young men to join our pack.  Along with learning responsibilities to yourself and others we do a variety of arts and crafts, community service and pack outings. This past year we did a trip to the Herkimer Diamond Mines.
